Deadline Day Deals

Rovers bring in two key signings as the window closes (at last)
Scott Dann
SCOTT DANN
As the Summer window closes (23:00 BST) Blackburn Rovers Manager Steve Kean will be delighted that he's managed to bring in a quality defender in Scott Dann from Birmingham City, and (CONFIRMED) Yakubu from Everton. Dann will be coming back to the North West, the 24 year old was born on Merseyside, and moved to Birmingham City from Coventry in 2009. He has cost £6 million rising to a possible £8 million - making the player the most expensive of the Venkys era. He told the clubs official website that he's glad to get the deal done, and he's worked with Steve Kean (at Coventry) and he was instrumental in bringing him to Ewood Park. "He's shown what he sees in me and I'm delighted to get the deal done". Yakubu was out on loan at Leicester City last term. The Nigerian International joined Everton in 2007, and at 28 would bring some valuable fire power to Kean's team. Yakubu told Sky Sports news that he'd met up with Steve Kean and described him as a 'great manager' who he was looking forward to playing for. The striker pictured signing autographs for Rovers fans at Ewood Park. The usual deadline day rumours linked the club with a host of potential signings. BBC Sport have also announced that Rovers have added teenage striker Jordan Slew from Sheffield United. The 18-year-old will cost Rovers an initial £1m, and certainly looks like one for the future.(CONFIRMED)
Yakubu
YAKUBU

At the same time SKY Sports report that out of favour El Hadji Diouf has been released by the club. A firm favourite of Big Sam, once the former manager left Ewood Park the Senegal international went out on loan last season to play with Rangers in Scotland. It's believed that on his return he didn't train with Rovers and now as a free agent might find it easier to find a new club. Rovers fans will also be delighted to retain the services of captain Chris Samba - linked with a big money move out of Blackburn for most of the closed season. He returned to action at the weekend after an injury hit pre-season.

Blackburn have had quite a busy month adding Simon Vukcevic from Sporting Lisbon, Radosav Petrovic from Partizan Belgrade, David Goodwillie and from Dundee United plus of course Bruno Ribeiro. The departures started with Phil Jones, and also out amongst the big names was Benjani, Nikola Kalinic and Keith Andrews. And of course last week Rovers fans said farewell to their longest serving player Brett Emerton. (31st August 2011) UPDATEDS 1st September 2011)

Blackburn Rovers 0

- 1 Everton

Rovers miss two penalties - Everton score with a controversial one!
Steve Kean
STEVE KEAN
Blackburn Rovers Manager Steve Kean was left shell shocked after a game in which the home side dominated most of the play and created virtually all the chances was decided on an injury time controversial penalty decision. Rovers hit the woodwork three times and missed two penalties on an emotional afternoon where Brett Emerton was given the captains arm band and played his last Blackburn game. Both Junior Hoilett and Mauro Formica failed to score from the spot. Firstly Tim Howard went the right way and stopped the spot kick just 2 minutes after the break, then Formica was brought down nand chose to convert the penalty himself. He didn't, as the ball found the post rather than the back of the net. Both David Dunn and Morten Gamst Pedersen started the game, but were injury casualties, replaced by Radosav Petrovic and Mauro Formica. Dunny could have opened the scoring after just ten minutes when his shot hit the upright of the Everton goal. Later sub David Goodwillie also managed to find the vertical, only moments after he'd been brought on to replace Jason Roberts. Tim Howard was on top form and kept the visitors in the game as Rovers continued to look likely to be the team to score. But with only injury time to play referee Lee Mason decided Chris Samba had fouled (flattened) Marouane Fellaini in the box and awarded a spot kick. The replays clearly showed that Mr. Mason had got the call wrong, but despite protests from the Blackburn team and their fans Mikel Arteta put the ball on the spot and fired home the winner for Everton with 92 minutes on the clock. Steve Kean told reporters: "It was a tough one to take. I thought Chris Samba had got his head on the ball. I couldn't see what was wrong with his header. Don't forget, we hit the woodwork three times and missed two penalties. I know we should always put away penalties but both spot-kick takers showed a lot of bottle in standing up to hit them. Losing two of our main players to injury early in the game did not help but we applied ourselves well, looked good in the final third and I was pleased with the opportunities we created." Whatever the reason for the result, it still leaved Rovers pointless after three games and bottom of the Premiership table. After an international break they are next in action live on SKY on Sunday 11th September when they play away at Fulham. And there's more TV the next week with an early kick off at Ewood when they host Arsenal ahead of a 3rd round Carling Cup tie a few days later. (27th August 2011)

Blackburn Rovers have announced that after eight years Australian Brett Emerton is going back down under. The clubs longest serving player will move to Australian A-League side Sydney FC almost exactly 8 years since he made his debut and scored in a 5-1 over Wolves at the start of the 2003-4 season. After 247 appearances and 13 goals the much loved stalwart's contract would have run out at the end of this season. He says it's time to go home. "I'm a Sydney boy and I'm looking forward to representing the people of Sydney every week,... Football has been very good to me and I have always said I'd like to come back and play in the A-League while I still have something to offer and thanks to Sydney FC and Blackburn Rovers that opportunity has come about a bit earlier than I had thought."
BBC sport report that he is Australia's second most-capped player with 87 appearances, and is scheduled to play for the Socceroos in their World Cup qualifier against Thailand in Brisbane on September 2nd. He should play his final Rovers game against Everton on Saturday.
Brett set up the opening goal in this weeks Carling Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday. Fellow professionals say he'll be sadly missed - but want to wish him good luck as he returns home. (25th August 2011)

Blackburn Rovers 3

- 1 Sheffield Wednesday

Carling Cup Joy and into round 3
Carling Cup
If Blackburn Rovers were under any sort of pressure to provide a convincing win at Ewood - they wasted no time in getting it! Just seven minutes into their 2nd round Carling Cup tie, they were already 3-0 up. A brace from Ruben Rochina and then a third from David Goodwillie put Rovers in a strong position to progress in the competition, and despite a consolation goal from Sheffield Wednesday, the 3-1 finish was more than enough. Brett Emerton provide the cross for Rochina to claim his first goal for the club after less than three minutes. He doubled his tally a minute later, this time Goodwillie offering the assist. And with less than seven minutes on the watch it was the Scottish striker who made it three picking up on an Owls defensive error. Five minutes after the restart, Clinton Morrison clawed one back for the boys from Yorkshire, and the stats show they only had two more shots on target, while Rovers amassed nine over the 90 minutes. A delighted Steve Kean told reporters of Goddwillie's goal "He struck it really well ... that's what he's got in the locker ... and Ruben is a quality finisher as well. I think the fans have seen a little glimpse of the future tonight. These youngsters have quality in abundance, and they certainly showed that tonight." The draw for the third round will be on Saturday lunchtime, ahead of the Premier league home game against Everton (24th August 2011)

Simon Vukcevic

- joins on 3 year deal

More names added to Blackburn squad ...
Simon Vukcevic
SIMON VUKCEVIC
Blackburn Rovers have made a further summer signing, bringing in midfielder Simon Vukcevic from Sporting Lisbon on a 3 year deal. BBC Sport report that the 25 year old might be available for a home debut against Everton on Saturday. He still needs a work permit & visa. They quote manager Steve Kean as saying "He is an exciting player who can play wide on either side. He likes to take people on, to be the guy who makes a difference, a bit of a match winner. He is a very good player with lots of international games under his belt for country in the top 20 ...I've watched him a number of times live and if you can get the ball out wide to him and he can isolate a full-back, then it will be hard for anyone to stop him when he is on the run. That's exactly the type of player we have been after." Simon is Rovers fourth signing, and might quickly be joined by centre-back George John from Major League Soccer side FC Dallas. The BBC say that all the paperwork for the player is done- and he needs to travel to Greece to collect his passport. Kean says: "We've been tracking him through a scout based in the USA. He is 6ft 4in, a commanding defender. He is quick, aggressive, and he has a really bright future." ... And there are rumours of even more players who could join Blackburn before the window closes next week. (23rd August 2011)

Aston Villa 3

-1 Blackburn Rovers

Two games - two losses - bad start continues
Morten Gamst Pedersen
MORTEN GAMST PEDERSEN
Villa Park hasn't been one of Rovers happiest hunting grounds in recent years, and so it was again when Blackburn lost 3-1 to Aston Villa in the second game of the new season. Despite the return of Ryan Nelsen to help the defense, it only took eleven minutes for the first home goal. Gabriel Agbonlahor claiming it. Just thirteen minutes later, Emile Heskey doubled their advantage, and Rovers seemed to overwhelmed by the Villa attack. There were improvements in Blackburn's game after the break, and they were rewarded when Morten Gamst Pedersen headed home to make it 2-1. But that was probably as good as it got, and when Darren Bent added a third the game was up for the visitors. Manager Steve Kean told reporters "I thought we started the game well. If we look back at the goal we gave away, the first was fantastic from Agbonlahor, but we're disappointed with the second because it took an unfortunate deflection off Pedersen. We then spoke at half-time about how we would come out for the second half, and I thought we were excellent, we scored the goal and Villa were on the back foot. The third goal then killed us because once we scored we were in the ascendancy."
Rovers fans will be concerned to see their side at the bottom of the table - already with 1 -3 goal difference, and will hope for the return of more players by next weekend when Everton visit Ewood Park. Before that, it's a 3rd round Carling cup against Sheffield Wednesday. (21st August 2011)

Blackburn Rovers 1

-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Too many injuries as Rovers loose opener at Ewood
Maro Formica
MAURO FORMINCA
Rovers kicked of their new season with three key defenders missing. Ryan Nelsen was known to be out, Chris Samba was a doubt and then Gael Givet fell ill. The manager pushed Steven Nzonzi into the back four and had little on the bench if anyone was needed. To compound his problems, Steve Kean then lost Brett Emerton at the break (ham string) and the makeshift side struggled. Things seemed to have started well enough when a 3rd minute shot looked to have beaten Wayne Hennessey in the Wolves goal. Match officials weren't sure - so no goal given. But then after 19 minutes, Mauro Formica claimed his first Premier League goal on his first start. Rovers were certainly on top. But just 3 minutes later Stephen Fletcher had pulled things back when he opened the coring for the visitors. At half time - all square at 1-1 ... but less than 2 minutes after the restart a penalty was awarded against Michel Salgado, and although Paul Robinson stopped the spot kick, Stephen Ward put the clearance away. Wolves had few other chances - Robinson little to do. But Blackburn failed to find a finish either despite a bright start for (sub) new boy David Goodwillie.
A frustrated Steve Kean told RADIO ROVERS : "It is a sore result to take. We are obviously down to the bare bones in the central defense area ... We'd obviously lost Chris Samba through injury, Gael Givet was unwell and Ryan Nelsen wasn't ready to play yet. I thought we started the game well, it was good to see Formica take his goal well. We needed to go another ten minutes to see it out a little bit because we knew that the thing that Wolves do well are back post crosses. So we are all very disappointed because our preparation from pre-season has been fantastic, though I thought the young lads did well. The break of the ball never went for us today, but it wasn't for the want of trying."
So - not what the the gaffer or the fans ordered - but there were 'mitigating circumstances'. The boss hopes to have other players available for next weekend when Rovers travel to Aston Villa for their first away game of the new season. (13th August 2011)

Goodbye to

- Kalinic & Andrews

Rovers manager confirms expected departures
Nikola KalinicKeith Andrews
KALINIC & ANDREWS
Blackburn Rovers manager Steve Kean has confirmed the much anticipated departure of both Nikola Kalinic and Keith Andrews. The Croatian has left the club to join Ukrainian side Dnipro - and Andrews goes out on loan to Ipswich Town. Kean told reporters "Niko Kalinic's transfer is just about to be completed in the Ukraine, whilst Keith Andrews has had four or five other clubs chasing him, which is no surprise. So I think that one will also be done and dusted today where Keith will go on a loan basis to Ipswich start with, it is a loan with a view to purchasing him."
It's been a frustrating time of Nicko - scoring 13 goals in 53 matches for Rovers - with 5 goals from 18 appearances last season. He moved to Blackburn for £6 million a couple of years ago - with his International coach believing he would become a real Premier league star.
Keith Andrews came from MK Dons when Paul Ince took over as manager - and again fround his options under successive managers limited.
Good luck to both players (11th August 2011)

SHIRT SPONSOR

Blackburn Rovers have announced a new shirt sponsor - just two days ahead of the start of the new season. With the end of Crown Paints deal, the club played with owners 'Venky's' logo on their shirts in pre-season. Now they have announced that the new strip for this season will carry the logo of "The Princes Trust" - a charity headed by Prince Charles. Aston Villa were the first club to support the charity, and Simon Williams (head of commercial & marketing) now says: "The club has enjoyed a strong and productive relationship with the Prince's Trust since 2005 and this agreement takes that relationship on to another level. The exposure the Prince's Trust will obtain as our shirt partner will greatly increase the level of awareness for the charity and hopefully encourage fundraising for the fantastic work they do to with young people."
Venky's Balaji Rao is quoted on the clubs official website as saying. "Helping young people is very much at the forefront of our community work in India and this partnership is a perfect way for us to support charities and worthy causes through football over here."

Radosav Petrovic signs four year deal with Rovers
Radosav Petrovic
RADOSAV PETROVIC
Blackburn Rovers have added a second summer signing adding Partizan Belgrade midfielder Radosav Petrovic to their squad on a four year deal. The clubs official website report that after an appeal they now have a work permit for the Serbian, and describe the signing as a 'Major Coup'. Rovers manager Steve Kean says "Many European clubs were interested and we consider signing him a major coup. His record to date speaks for itself and he is exactly the sort of player we have been looking to recruit." Petrovic is away on international duties with a Serbian friendly match scheduled in Moscow against Russia.
The 22 year old has been with Partizan since 2008 making 70 appearances and scoring 17 goals. He's a big lad at just under 2 meters (6'4") and is described as a defensive midfielder. He's already made 19 appearances for Serbia. (9th August 2011)

Pre Season ends in Scotland - with a Scottish debut goal!
David Goodwillie
DAVID GOODWILLIE
David Goodwillie only joined Blackburn Rovers a few days ago, but came off the bench in his native Scotland to score Rovers final pre-season goal. The home side had first blood when Gary Harkins had his shot deflected home by Grant Hanley. Moment later it wa all square with David Dunn scoring from the spot, and just a minute later Jason Roberts made it 2-1 to the visitors. Roberts claimed his second (34 mins) after a penalty was awarded after a the Kilmarnock keeper cleared a ball that hit David Dunn. Despite some good play later from the hosts - they couldn't find another goal - but Blackburn new boy - David Goodwillie enjoyed a return north of the border when he came off the bench to make it 4-1 with quarter of an hour to go.
Steve Kean told the clubs official website he was delighted with the afternoon: "It was good to end the pre-season matches with a win. You know you are going to get a good competitive match when you play a team from Scotland and I felt that was what we got. We scored some good goals, had a couple of penalties and I was delighted for David Goodwillie to score on his debut. It was a typical goal from him, his awareness to pick up the bounce of the ball, to turn inside and score, he's a natural finisher. He's got that goal out of the way now and we are all delighted for him, he hasn't even had time to train with the lads yet, so that goal will do him the world of good. We now lose some of the lads as they go off on international duty, but it is the same for all teams, we just have to get on with it and fully focus on next weekend and Wolves."
So no more pre-season freindlies - back to Premier League action at Ewood next Saturday at 15:00 BST to pick up where they left off. The season opener Rovers v Wolves .
