After all the pressure at the weekend for a first Premier League win - the League cup provided Rovers with back to back wins and progress into the final 16 of this years competition. And despite a host of changes from the team who beat Arsenal, the game against bottom of League One side Leyton Orient came close to needing extra time! The Orient keeper was under pressure for much of the first half, pulling off some impressive saves, but when Terrell Forbes brought down Martin Olsson, Jason Roberts converted from the spot to make it 1-0. It seemed to be all Rovers, but the visitors brought things back to all square when David Mooney made it 1-1 after an hour. Ten minutes later Ruben Rochina added to his last Carling cup tie goal tally to make it 2-1, and then Simon Vukcevic claimed his first goal for Rovers five minutes later to make it 3-1 and it looked all over. Lee Butcher made some more fine saves, but the visitors also game Mark Bunn some problems, and with less than five minutes left Dean Cox pulled the score back to a difficult 3-2. After making 8 changes, Steve Kean was delighted to progress in the competition and collect another win at Ewood Park. Rovers took the not so pretty route to the quarter finals of this years Carling Cup - coasting through at 90 minutes - then facing extra time to claim their spot. Steve Kean made five changes to the side who faced Spurs on Sunday, and it looked to be going really well when Rubin Rochina continued his excellent cup form giving his side the lead in less than 5 minutes. Newcastle felt they deserved a penalty just after the break, and then it was Rovers who got the spot kick when the Toon keeper seemed to bring down Rochina and Yakubu made it 2-0. There were a number of other questionable decisions, but Rovers looked certain to ease through still with a clean sheet when the extra time board went up. Five minutes were added, and it took three of them for Danny Guthrie to pull it back to 2-1 and then as the clock ticked on to 96 minutes Yohan Cabaye forced extra time with an amazing long distance free kick. So all square and two more periods of play needed - plus the possibility of penalties! Nine minutes into the first period Morten Gamst Pedersen trumped Guthries free kick withy a strike from 35 yards. His shot took a deflection - then beat the keeper to make it 3-2. Amazingly two minutes after that period should have ended Newcastle were awarded a spot kick and this time Peter Lovenkrands put it away. 3-3 and one last period to play, It was end to end and penalties looked likely when with just seconds left Morten took another free kick, which Chris Samba nodded on and 'man of the match' Gael Givet headed home the winner! An extraordinary 120 minutes of cup football enjoyed by almost as many of the Toon Army as Rovers fans. Both sets applauded an amazing evening and Rovers ended the Magpies unbeaten start to the season and are in the draw for the quarters on Saturday.
Steve Kean told reporters: "Gael Givet encapsulates the whole spirit we have got here - he had a hamstring nick but would not come off. He's a warrior, he has put his head where other people wouldn't put their feet. He was fantastic. It's tough mentally when they scored so late to go and score again but we did it. We are always going to score goals but we have been working day in, day out defensively so that when we lose possession we get a good shape."
Now it's back to the Premier League on Saturday with the long trip to Norwich City where a win is desperately needed. (26th October 2011)

Rovers crash out of the Carling Cup in Wales
Almost a decade ago Blackburn Rovers returned from the Welsh Capitol triumphant after winning the then Worthington Cup. This trip had no happy ending and as November comes to a close they lost again - and this time also bowed out of the competition. The big prize of a semi-final was awarded to the Bluebirds' on an emotional night after applause and silence honoured the sad passing of Gary Speed - the Nation's football manager. Steve Kean made five changes, with Mark Bunn in goal and a rare start for Nick Blackman. The visitors certainly had chances - and dominated the first quarter of an hour of the game, but when Rovers gave the ball away it left Kenny Miller with just two to beat to open the scoring in the 19th minute. David Dunn was captain for the night, and provided some good balls for the front men, but the half ended with Cardiff City 1-0 up. A bright second half for Rovers didn't last long .. less than five minutes in Anthony Gerrard doubled City's advantage, and effectively extinguished Blackburn 's hopes of making the semi-finals. Steve Kean left it late to make attacking substitutions , brining on Yakubu and Roberts for Goodwillie and Blackman - but despite some good chances they pair were unable to dint the Cardiff defense. The home side had been on a good run of form, and they now take that forward into 2012 with their first set of semi's for over half a century. For Blackburn it's more Welsh opposition on Saturday with Swansea at Ewood Park - and it really is a MUST win game. (29th November 2011)
