I
KNOW THAT SCORE!
Arsenal 6-2 Blackburn Rovers
When Rovers and Arsenal met
three years ago - the score line was a disappointing 6-2 ...
today's repeat had a very different script but sadly exactly
the same result! This time Rovers opened the scoring with
an entertaining first half. Steven Nzonzi claimed Blackburn's
first, headed home with just 4 minutes on the board. But with
Rovers missing their key central defenders (Samba and Nelsen)
the joy was short lived. With quarter of an hour gone, Thomas
Vermaelen claimed the first for the home side. Then Rovers
were right back in it when David Dunn poked home on the half
hour. This time however it was just two minutes before Robin
van Persie made it 2-2, and four minutes later it was 3-2
with Andrey Arshavin also on the score sheet! It was just
too easy for the gunners to get behind Rovers make shift back
four - and ten minutes after the break Francesc Fabregas added
their fourth, then Theo Walcott came off the bench to make
it 5-2. Big Sam tried to shuffle his pack - but when David
Dunn made way for Benni McCarthy, the South African lasted
for less than ten minutes before being replaced by Junior
Hoylett. The final insult came with minutes to play when Nicklas
Bendtner found the top corner of Robinson's net to make it
6-2 - again! Dunny should have been awarded a penalty and
Junior hit the post - so it could have been a bit tighter.
But on an historic day for the Londoner's with Arsene Wenger
becoming the longest-serving Arsenal boss - 13 years in charge
- the result was probably predictable. The bookies certainly
thought so. (4th October 2009)

I
KNEW HE KNEW, I KNEW HE KNEW
!!
10 man Rovers pick up 3 great points
Blackburn Rovers 2-1 Aston Villa
David Dunn told RADIO ROVERS
that when he placed the ball on the spot to take a penalty against
old team mate Brad Friedel - he knew, that Brad knew, that he
knew which way he would go! He didn't and that double bluff
paid off with an 88th minute winner for Rovers. Things couldn't
have started much worse for Blackburn 1-0 down within 3 minutes
after Gabriel Agbonlahor's shot dribbled in off the inside of
the post to the home fans shock and amazement. Many hadn't even
taken their seats - and after the errors made at Everton - they
must have feared the worse. But to Rovers credit, they were
not knocked too far off course, and it took 20 further minutes
for them to get back on level terms. The equalser came courtesy
of Chris Samba who beat Friedel with a close range finish. Referee
Clattenburg made few friends with a series of decisions going
against Rovers, and started to hand out yellow cards starting
with Vince Grella. When in the second half the Australian made
a rash challenge, the second yellow saw Blackburn reduced to
10 men. Paul Robinson made a few essential saves, and Brad Friedel
stopped Dunny from claiming a second for Rovers. Sam made three
subs, and it looked like he'd have to settle for a well won
point - but with just minutes left to play, a handball decision
went against Richard Dunne, and his names sake wasted no time
placing the ball on the spot. Friedel went the wrong way - and
Blackburn secured their second home win of the season.
Big Sam was delighted - telling reporters:- "Throughout
the season there are special games and this is one of them.
We saw desire, grit and determination, and then the quality.
We've played our best today - this season we've had some good
performances but disappointing results, today we got both right.
That should give the team great heart, they're improving week
by week."
The result saw Rovers
pull away from the bottom three and up to 15th - and the home
fans enjoyed a fantastic afternoon in the autumn sunshine. Next
up at Ewood ... The Clarets!! (26th September 2009)

Benni
McCarthy
|
FIRST
OF THE SEASON FOR McCARTHY
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Blackburn
Rovers
It was all change at the City
ground (10 of them) as Blackburn hoped to put Sunday's sorry
display at Everton behind them and hope for success in the Carling
Cup .. But things didn't looked to have changed too much as
Forest took charge for the first period. Slowly Rovers seemed
to come into the game, with youngster Phil Jones making a brilliant
debut in defense. But when former Blackburn boy Joe Garner concedes
a free kick for a foul on Martin Olsson, it was Benni McCarthy
who stepped up to take the shot. His ball passed everyone including
the keeper to find the back of the net. 1-0 and that's just
how it stayed. Blackburn had a few chances - but there was little
for Forest until Steven Reid handled to provide them with a
penalty. But when Dexter Blackstock struck the shot, Jason Brown
dived the right way and the ball stayed out of the Rovers net!
There were a few more nervy moments - but Blackburn survived
to progress to the next round - where they won't meet Blackpool
or Burnley who both lost. (22nd September 2009)

BAD
DAY AT THE TOFFEES
Everton 3-0 Blackburn Rovers
Last season opened at Everton - with Rovers
picking up their first win under Paul Ince. This term - things
were very different! Blackburn created few chances, and seemed
strangely vulnerable at the back. Despite Paul Robinson having
a good gave over all - the Rovers keeper collected three balls
from the back of his net - two from Louis Saha and one from
Joseph Yobo. It took Saha just 21 minutes to score his first
- from inside the area with the help of Leighton Baines. Blackburn
held on to the 1-0 deficit for the rest of the half and there
were hopes that things might turn after the team talk - they
didn't! Everton came out just as determined - and despite ringing
the changes, Big Sam didn't seem to have a solution. Saha made
it 2-0 in the 53rd and the final blow saw Yobo find another
close range goal just short of the hour mark.
The Rovers manager was honest with the media post match - admitting:-
"I think we were poor to be honest. We've got no resilience
away from home. We let ourselves down on set pieces and gave
Everton an easy victory. We could have stopped two goals from
a corner and a free-kick. We're not getting the results we need
to avoid struggling this season. It's a disappointing result
and a disappointing performance but its one we need to get over."
And there's not much time to do that
- with the league cup on Tuesday at Nottingham Forest.
The result sees Blackburn back in the bottom three with just
4 points from 5 games. (20th September 2009)

Zurab
Khizanishvilli |
ZURAB
A MAGPIE
Georgian goes out on loan
Blackburn Rovers defender Zurab Khizanishvilli has joined Newcastle
United on loan for the next three months and Big Sam says it
should be great for the player. The Rovers manager says it may
lead to something more permanent - but for now it is just a
loan. Zurab has signed in time to play for Newcastle at the
weekend. Talking to the club webiste Sam also revealed that
Zurab was keen to move before the window closed - but no suitable
deal was available. Sam said:- "We've
managed to agree a situation with Newcastle for the next three
months so that Zurab can get some first team football, a situation
he desperately needs and was desperately after. It may lead
to something more permanent, I don't know at this stage, but
certainly Zurab and ourselves are glad that he's got the chance
he wanted." (18th September 2009)

Lucas
Neill |
HE
DID END UP IN LIVERPOOL!
Lucas Neil is Blue again ...
When Australian defender Lucas
Neill left Blackburn Rovers, the expectation was that he'd head
to the red half of Liverpool. He left Ewood Park in the 2007
January transfer window - and despite expectation that he'd
join Liverpool, instead his move was to West Ham but tuned down
a new contract there in June. He'd been linked with a move this
summer to sunnier climes, but today Everton announced that they'd
signed him on a 'free' for a one year contract. The Australian
captain might meet up again with his former team mates and fellow
Countrymen when the Toffees host Rovers on Sunday. Everton stand
second bottom of the Premier league with 3 points from 4 games.
Their only league win was Wigan at home - however their European
performances have been more successful. (17th September 2009)

El-Hadji
Diouf |
THAT'S
BETTER - FIRST 3 POINTS
Blackburn Rovers 3-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Jason Roberts could well have been a hat
trick hero - but had to settle for one goal against his name
- and even then it was originally credited to Givet! Rovers
started their latest home game with intent - they had a corner
16 seconds in, and Jason Roberts should have claimed his first
when he was flagged off side as he steamed towards goal. El
Hadji Diouf has the honour of the seasons first home goal -
his close range opener came 18 minutes in. There should have
been more before the break - but Rovers had to wait till the
second half for their next. When it came Gael Givet looked to
have been provider - but on closer inspection Jason Roberts
final touch gave the striker the credit. He's started as a lone
front man - but David Dunn was never far behind, and his reward
came in the 63rd minute when Roberts looked destined to score
and Dunny helped the ball over the line. 3-0 would have been
a great way to claim the points - so it was a little disappointing
when Stefan Maierhofer came off the bench to claim a consolation
goal for Wolves with less than three minutes left of normal
time. Just under 25,000 enjoyed a brilliant late summer afternoon
and celebrated Rovers first home win of the campaign moving
up to 13th place with a game in hand.
Big Sam told reporters "I'm delighted with the
performance, which has brought us what we deserved. The players
showed a lot of spirit and a lot of quality. It's a relief that
we have three points in the bag at last." Next
up Rovers travel to Everton next Sunday -then its back home
to meet Aston Villa in a fortnights time. (12th September 2009)

SUMMER
WINDOW CLOSED
No new news
And to be honest it was a very
quiet extra day at Ewood Park. The extension to 17:00 on Tuesday
September 1st didn't provide Rovers with any more departures
or arrivals. There had been plenty of rumours, including one
linking Morten Gamst Pedersen with a move to join Matt Derbyshire
at Olympiakos - but when the Summer transfer window closed Blackburn
hadn't done any late trading. It's well reported that Bug Sam
is no fan of the 'window' system ... and he for one will be
pleased that all the speculation is over - at least 'till January.
The one bit of news that did come out of Ewood Park was confirmation
that Rovers will be away at Nottingham Forest on September 22nd
at 19:45 hrs for their 3rd round Carling Cup tie.
So now Sam can have a short 'International' break and prepare
for wolves at home on September 12th. (1st September 2009)
