David
'Junior' Hoilett |
FIRST
POINT OF THE SEASON
Blackburn Rovers 0-0 West Ham United
Big Sam said his first objective was to keep a clean sheet -
so objective one was achieved. He also hoped to pop the odd
ball into the West Ham net - sadly that one didn't happen! With
Jason Roberts up front and David Dunn just behind chances were
few in the first half. Chris Samba came close, and Roberts might
have claimed one - but nothing seemed to provide the perfect
finish. New boy Pascal Chimbonda was certainly effective at
the back, and Paul Robinson had little to do. Sam made a couple
of second half changes, giving 'Junior' Hoilett and Nicola Kalinic
chances. And it was Junior who seemed to have the greatest impact.
More chances created and at least three of them could have provided
Blackburn with that elusive goal. In the end the manager seemed
happy to have claimed that vital first point of the season -
and to have kept a clean sheet. He told RADIO ROVERS ..."We
had to play a slower game and a more accomplished passing game
today because we weren't as strong a force on the front line
as we would have been by playing a little bit more directly
like we could have done .I understand that the fans like us
to get the ball into the box early but playing Dunny in the
hole meant that we wanted to play through midfield and be a
little bit more patient ... we've shown that we can be adaptable
on the basis of what players we've got available and what system
we play." And Sam added "We've
got keep plugging away and keep playing and performing as well
as this. Experience tells me that they always turn into wins
eventually."
The result sees Rovers move outside the bottom three
with a game in hand and 1 point from the first three games.
Now with an International break it will be September 12th before
they can add to that tally - when Wolves come to Ewood. (29th
August 2009)

VILLA
SIGN WARNOCK ... ROVERS SIGN CHIMBONDA
One out and another one in
As expected earlier this week
- Blackburn Rovers have parted company with popular player
Stephen Warnock, who's signed a four year deal at Aston Villa.
His new team paraded him last night ahead of their game and
departure from the Uefa Europa League. Warnock told the Villa
website "The main aim is pushing
for that top four spot in the Premier League."
Warnock came to Rovers from Liverpool when it was thought
Lucas Neill would go the other way. In the end Neill left
for West Ham, and Stephen became a fans favourite. He was
on the bench for Blackburn's 3-1 win at Gillingham on Tuesday
night. Last term he was awarded 'Player of the Season' - and
he'll undoubtedly be missed.
Pascal Chimbonda is Sam's latest addition to the Blackburn
squad - with injury worries and Warnock's departure, Pascal
could be very useful. He plays at centre-back or left-back
but often right-back, so anywhere in defense really! At 30,
he's moved about a bit recently - and this is his third move
in the past year. He's thought to have cost Rovers around
£2 million and comes on a two year deal. Sam is quoted
by the BBC as saying "We've
got an experienced player who is desperate to play football
again, having missed it at Spurs. The experience of the player,
the adaptability of the player in a number of positions and
his past record means we will have a good player on our hands
and will not miss Warnock too much. We all know his favourite
position is right-back. We are well covered there, but he
can play centre-back and left-back." So that should
see the Frenchman have an instant roll - and is eligible to
play at Ewood on Saturday against West Ham. (28th

FIRST
SEASON WIN AT GILLINGHAM
Gillingham 1-3 Rovers
Seven changes for Rovers - and
the Carling Cup gave first starts this season to David Dunn
and Steven Reid. And it Dunny just five minutes to make his
mark, Nicola Kalinic providing the ball that allowed the Rovers
'veteran' to put the ball away. 'Junior' Hoilett - making his
first Rovers senior start was next to find the net, playing
on the right side of midfield. He'd been threatening fro some
time before claiming his debut goal on the stroke of half time.
Another good start to part two for Rovers, but it was Gillingham
who were next to to make their mark, with a penalty awarded
for 'an unfair challenge' on Simeon Jackson by Zurab Khizanishvili.
Jackson placed the ball on the spot and beat Jason Brown - despite
the rovers keep going the right way. But Blackburn continued
to come up with the chances, Jason Roberts - on for Kalinic
- found the under side of the bar, and was very unlucky not
to score. Then the three hundred odd Rovers fans who'd traveled
for the game got their reward as Morten Gamst Pedersen did what
we'd been told he could do ... score direct from a corner! With
fifteen minutes left, Morten tried to repeat the trick, and
Blackburn could have scored more. But Sam will be happy with
the first season win, and progress to the Carling Cup third
round - the draw on Saturday at noon. According to radio commentary,
'Junior' Hoilett deserved the man of the match award. The only
cause for concern - the departure at the break of Steven Reid
- with what might by a ham string problem. You can hear all
the details on Saturday morning 'live' on RADIO ROVERS. (25th
August 2009)

Gael

STILL
NO POINTS FOR ROVERS
Sunderland 2-1 Blackburn Rovers
It
started so well for Rovers - all the early pressure and Jason
Roberts had the ball in the net only to have it ruled out
for off side. Starting with Franco di Santo up front with
Roberts, he was to be replaced after just 13 minutes with
an injury. That gave new boy Nicola Kalinic the chance to
make his Blackburn debut. But the honour of Rovers first goal
of the season went to Gael Givet who found the back of the
net after just 20 minutes. After that all the stats continued
to be in favour of the visitors. Blackburn playing some good
football and likely to add to their lead. But then after half
an hour Kenwyne Jones put one past Robinson from inside the
box to make it 1-1 at the break. More problems for Rovers
at the restart with Ryan Nelsen replaced by Martin Olsson
and just seven minutes in to the half Kenwyne Jones headed
home to claimed his second. But again Blackburn appeared to
have scored but another one was ruled out for off side. The
commentary teams seem to agree that there was little wrong
with either of their disallowed strikes. Rovers final sub
saw El Hadji Diouf replaced by Benni McCarthy to help try
and find an allowed goal! From a free kick McCarthy and Kalinic
both looked set to score - but somehow the ball stayed out
- again! McCarthy has another chance, but Marton Fulop made
another save. Deep into injury time Nicol Kalinic placed his
shot wide and failed to be Rovers hero.
Sam Allardyce told BBC Sport:- "I'm
really quite sick as our performances are not achieving the
results we perhaps deserve. We have to be more ruthless in
front of goal and have to concentrate for 90 minutes, particularly
defensively. We feel a bit hard done by on the goals disallowed,
certainly the first one. If that's an infringement, then there
would be 20 free-kicks and penalties given in every game."
A game they should have won easily, finished with a 2-1 defeat.
Gillingham next in the League cup and then West Ham at Ewood

ANOTHER
DEPARTURE??
Stephen Warnock Villa move?
Reports this morning suggest
that Stephen Warnock could be the latest player to say goodbye
to Ewood Park in the summer transfer window. vitalfootall.com
say that Villa's latest bid for the defender might have met
Rovers expectations. They say "There
are reports eminating that suggest that Aston Villa have made
another bid for Stephen Warnock and he has been withdrawn
from the matchday squad to face Sunderland." The
website also say the figure of £8 million could be involved
in the move. Last week ahead of the new season Warnock talked
about his ambition to be in the England squad next summer,
and perhaps he needs a bigger shop window to make that happen.
This afternoon, Rovers look for their first points of the
season having missed out on their mid week game at Fulham
as they had a European match. With the 2 goal deficit from
the opening day, Big Sam will be keen to get something in
the North East. There's full commentary via the ROVERS PLAYER
- a rovers.co.uk subscription service. (22nd August 2009)

Paul
Gallagher |
GOODBYE
GALLY
Foxes future for Paul
Reports from Leicester suggest
that Paul Gallagher's turmoil of where he will play his football
could be over. Back home for the summer, and given a chance
in the season opener, Gally probably knew his chances of staying
in the Premier League were thin on the ground. Now Vitalfootball.co.uk
report that he's been at Leicester City today for talks and
a medical, and could be confirmed as their player tomorrow.
Out on loan for the past few seasons, it must have been hard
on the proud Scott, brought up in Blackburn. And with the departure
of Matt Derbyshire in the summer, that just leaves David Dunn
as one of the local lads that made it through to the senior
squad. Blackburn have also had Nathan Ellington on trail, and
there was always a chance he'd sit out another season but further
loans didn't look likely. Paul had a successful period last
term with Plymouth Argyle making 37 appearances and scoring
13 goals. His first Rovers performance was back in 2002-3 as
a sub against Arsenal. If confirmed, he'll leave Rovers as a
Scottish international, having just celebrated his 25th birthday.
We wish him well. (20th August 2009)
Gally Gone
Rovers confirm that Paul Gallagher has made the move to Leicester
City - having signed a three year deal. Sam Allardyce believes
that the change should help Gally get regular first team football
- something he couldn't be guaranteed at Rovers. No fee has
been announced. (21st August 2009)

SELGADO
SIGNS
Two year 'real deal'
Big Sam has got his man! A week
or so since the rumours started linking Rovers with the former
Real Madrid right-back, Michel Salgado is now a Blackburn player.
The 33 year old has signed a two year contract and told rovers.co.uk
"I want to enjoy the next two years, playing in the
Premier League. It is one of the best in the world. Not only
that it is pure football - fantastic games and a fantastic atmosphere.
This will be a good experience for me, my wife and children.
I have joined a historic club."
There were concerns last week that
the club might not have the resources to add another top player
to their ranks - but the board seem to have backed Sam who had
a bit of a reputation for finding former International stars
when down the road at Bolton.
According to Wikipedia.org entry "Michel
won the first of his 53 caps for Spain on September 5, 1998,
in an infamous 2–3 loss in Cyprus, for the Euro 2000 qualifiers,
and was part of the nation's squads at UEFA Euro 2000 and 2006
FIFA World Cup, starting in the former and being backup in the
latter, to Real Madrid teammate Ramos. Due to last-minute injuries,
he missed out on the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2004, and also
represented the autonomous Galician team. Salgado was named
in the Spanish Team of the Decade by Goal.com" (19th

NEVER
FORGOTTEN
There's only one Jack Walker
It's now nine years since Blackburn
Rovers lost their biggest ever supporter - the legend that was
Mr. Jack Walker. That August I wrote a few words of personal
tribute and also posted some 'photos on this site of the floral
tributes that surrounded Ewood Park. As another year passes
you might like to revisit those pages today and say "thanks
Uncle Jack" one more time. (18th August 2009)

Manchester
City
|
THE
LATE AND EARLY SHOW
Blackburn Rovers 0-2 Manchester City
Well there could have been a better result to start of the news
season - but don't let the scoreline give you the wrong idea.
Despite the result Rovers dominated large periods of play and
there were some good performances from players old and new.
When you've spent £95 million in the summer window- it
must be nice when some of your investment makes an instant repayment!
So it took less than 3 minutes for Emmanuel Adebayor to drive
in from 20 yards and Rovers were one down while some fans were
still on their way to their seats. But Blackburn battled back
.. creating chance after chance .. 9 shots on target in an exciting
game. Shay Given was kept busy and made some good saves, BENNI
McCARTHY and CHRIS SAMBA could easily have cleared the deficit.
KEITH ANDREWS might have claimed a penalty when the ball hit
Richard Dunne's arm ... MORTEN GAMST PEDERSEN was everywhere.
The rest of the first half was all Rovers - but to their credit
City stole the lions share of the second. Still there were Rovers
chances - Big Sam brining on FRANCO DO SANTO for JASON ROBERTS,
then PAUL GALLAGHER replaced KEITH ANDREWS, and finally youngster
JUNIOR HOILETT had a go at the expense of EL-HADJI DIOUF. Rovers
finished with three at the back and threw everything forward.
So with injury time being played it was not surprising that
Stephen Ireland rubbed salt in the wounds with City's second.
SAM ALLARDYCE told RADIO ROVERS that he felt sorry for the fans
"I
think it was a day where everybody turned up and everybody got
behind the team, and it was lovely to see that sort of atmosphere
right from the very start of the season, but we are so disappointed
to send our fans away from home with a defeat that we didn't
deserve. I'm sure they realise that as well as we do, but unfortunately
for me I'm in the results business and I want to deliver victories
and at least draws - particularly at home - and whilst we have
had a good performance it doesn't leave me with much comfort
losing."
Thankfully
for Blackburn the result that could have been back page headlines
was overshadowed by the late kick off game - Everton losing
at home to Arsenal by a dramatic 1-6 scorline! Early days then
and Rovers are next away at Sunderland next Saturday (15th August
2009)
