Historic win for Rovers - but tragic result for Ferguson ...
Rovers made history at St James's Park with a 1-0 win over Newcastle United (the first since 1958). But the result was tarnished after Barry Ferguson was stretchered off and will now be out for the rest of the season.

Rovers were the better team throughout - and despite a question mark over which part of Gally's body the goal went in from - deserved the 3 points. AT close of play it took the Blues up to 11th place - but the rest of the Premiership were still playing. (14th at the end of the day)
Hear Graeme Souness on BBCi Sport (talking about Barry Ferguson injury)
Souness also admits that "we have to spend money" in January - and hopes that the board will see it that way. With Ferguson out of contention - a midfield player may now be on the shopping list.

Ferguson was rushed to hospital and the prognosis didn't look good. It was an innocuous challenge - by Garry Speed, but what might have been a dislocation - looks like a broken knee cap. Souness came straight on the field to check out his midfield star and looked away when he realised just how much pain the young Scott was in. Post match he told SKY - it soured the result for Rovers.
