United 1 - Morten Gamst

1-2 the final score at OId Trafford!!! Rover
took 43 years for their win - but then made it all worth waiting
for as they collected all three points in a fantastic game
at the Theatre of dreams. United should and could have scored
a hat full before half time - but so could Rovers - but a
wonderful free kick (20 yards) taken by 'The Gamst' found
itself into the United net on 31 minutes. Rovers started the
match 4-4-2, but changed formation after the break as Man
Utd desperate to regain parity brought on Wayne Rooney and
punched for the equaliser. Ruud van Nistelrooy was the player
who brought it back to 1-1 on 66 minuets. Despite Brad Friedel
getting hold of the original shot from Rooney. Then with ten
minutes left to go - Pedersen delivered his second goal and
become a true Rovers legend.
Mark Hughes told reporters "We came
here with a game plan, there were areas we knew we could exploit
and we had the players to do it. "We expected pressure
in the second half but we withstood everything and in the
end they were just hitting long balls into the box. You have
to be mentally and physically strong at Old Trafford, and
we were." Blackburn moved to 12th in the table
and the fans had t,heir most memorable day out at Old Trafford
for a generation. (24th September 2005) rovers.co.uk

CRAIG
BELLAMY
A
brace for Bellamy & debut gaol for Zurab
as Rovers beat Huddersfield Town 3-1 at Ewood
It only took Craig Bellamy
11 minutes to open his account at Ewood, putting Blackburn
1-0 up in the Carling Cup. Huddersfield Town brought thousands
of fans from across the Pennines, and their League One side
never stopped battling for the equaliser, but on the hour
mark, Zurab Khizanishvili scored his first for Rovers to make
it 2-0. Not to be denied, the visitors made a couple of substitutions,
and moments later Pawel Abbott got one back for the Terriers
- 2-1. Paul Dickov and Craig Bellamy kept applying the pressure,
and Bellamy was rewarded with his second with just 6 minutes
to go. 3-1 the final score, and Rovers progressed to the next
round draw on Saturday lunchtime.
Craig Bellamy told Radio Rovers "Today
went as well as it could have, it is my second game back after
a bit of a lay-off in what has been a stop-start season for
me, but I'm really looking forward to the games ahead, and
hopefully I can stay injury free and go on from there."
Mark Hughes was also delighted - telling the station
"We wanted to have a bright start, it was important after
the weekend because we felt the tempo in our play wasn't right
in the initial period, but it was a lot better tonight and
that helped us. The important thing was to get through to
the next round, and we've achieved that so we are pleased,"
said Hughes after the game." (21st

SHEARER
GOAL
Shearer,
Owen and N'Zogbia - as Rovers go down 3-0 to Newcastle.
Despite dominating play for the first hour, a free kick awarded
to Newcastle (inside the D) gave Alan Shearer his first goal
since February, and opened the gates for two more from the
Tynesiders. Rovers started with Craig Bellamy up front and
included both David Bentley and Zuarb Khizanishvili in the
starting eleven. Mark Hughes first anniversary at Ewood ended
in a shock result, and propelled Newcastle up the table, as
Rovers dropped to 18th (on goal difference)
Mark Hughes told reporters "We created
a reasonable amount of chances and just needed one to go in,
but after the first goal we were poor and we showed naivety
at the end." And speaking on Radio
Rovers, the Manager said "We were the more likely
team to win the game right up until their goal, I felt the
free kick was a little bit harsh, but if you give away a free
kick in that position, then everyone knows what Alan Shearer
can do"
On what was his last league appearance at Ewood Park, Alan
Shearer left the game to a standing ovation from the fans.

BRAD
FRIEDEL
Friedel
signs up 'till 2008
Rovers number one keeper Brad
Friedel looks likely to play out his career at Ewood Park.
BBC sport report that Brad - who retired from International
duties for the USA earlier this year - has agreed a deal to
keep him a Blackburn player until he's 37. Friedel told the
Lancashire Evening Telegraph "I'm
delighted. I feel the staff we have now are ambitious and
they want to take the club forward. They want to get us up
to where we were a few years back when we were fighting for
the European places."
Brad came to Ewood on a free from Liverpool in 2000, and has
topped the Premiership for most clean sheets in a season.
"At the end of that contract, if we can go on year
to year from there then great but, if not, that is fantastic
as well." (15th September 2005)
Bolton
0 - Blackburn 0
Rovers brought back a well deserved point from the Reebok
after a much changed Blackburn starting eleven saw Matt Jansen
start up front as the lone striker. The first half offered
little to wither side, in what was a very disjointed game.
After the break Jansen was subbed for Kuqi and a debut for
David Bentley (on for Pedersen) seemed to bring the game to
life. The young on loan midfielder made some great runs down
the wing, and put some good passes into the box. The final
20 minutes saw Rovers dominate much of the play - but looking
like the most likely top score - they couldn't find the back
of the net.
Bolton manager Sam Allardyce: told BBC sport "When
we get closed down we find it incredibly it difficult to break
sides down. Hence we got a scrappy game, though I give Blackburn
the credit for shutting us down. They set their stall out
well. The fight for points is so desperate and money is so
valuable, it almost overshadows performance." Mark Hughes told rovers.co.uk:
"You always know when you come to the Reebok you have
to withstand the questions that Bolton pose of you, they get
plenty of balls into the box, you have to defend not only
the first ball but the second ball as well, and to be fair
I thought we coped quite comfortably. I thought in the second
half it was much of the same, we gained confidence because
they weren't causing us too many problems."
