Rovers never deserved to loose ... |
|||
![]() BENJANI |
It was an afternoon charged with high emotion raftered a minute of rapturous applause and chants of 'one Ronnie Clayton' ahead of kick off. The fans, players, family and former players joined together to remember the Rovers legend who passed away less than 24 hours before. And perhaps that also helped his team to lift their game and play an amazingly good first half against the Champions. Indeed it wouldn't have been too generous if the score had been 3-0 had Petr Chech not made some wonderful saves. Mame Diouf and then Benjani (making his first start) both looked certain to score - before El-Hadji Diouf tuned provider for Benjani to head in his first goal for Rovers. As half time approached Blackburn looked likely to hold on to their lead, but Nicolas Anelka spoilt the pies restoring the balance with a little help from Drogba. It was still a half to be proud off, and when they came out after the break a suspected hamstring for Benjani saw Jason Roberts get his first game of the season. And he looked in a wonderful position to give Rovers back the lead, but managed to miss by inches. With the clock running down Blackburn still looked good for a point - until Branislav Ivanovic headed home what was to be the winner for Chelsea. Reporters agreed that Ronnie Clayton would have been proud with the performance - as the match ended with a 1-2 win for the visitors. One fan on the BBC's 606 message board wrote: "What a first half and what a performance by the lads. Never been prouder to be a Rovers fans. This match reminds me of last season's carling cup match." Big Sam told RADIO ROVERS "There is no doubt that we deserved something out of the game, I think everybody here knows that, but that is why Chelsea are top of the league. We had them on the back foot for long periods of time, created lots and lots of chances.But whilst we played exceptionally well, scored a quality goal to go in front, we've then lost the game by two quality finishes by Chelsea on very few chances." Wigan owner Dave Whelan came to pay his respects to Ronnie - next week he'll be back for what should be a cracking North West derby - which is also a 'must win' game. (30th October 2010) |

The BBC say that "the VH Group was founded in 1971 and is based in the western state of
Maharashtra" John Williams told rovers.co.uk "A series of meetings, including discussions with the Premier League, have followed an extensive due diligence process. Both parties are hopeful that the transaction will be completed in November." and Venkys' Chairperson Anuradha J. Desai is quoted as saying: "We expect to be the first Indian company to acquire a Premier League team and we are particularly delighted that the team is Blackburn Rovers, with whom we believe we have many shared values and ambitions." Three goals in 8 minutes at Anfield |
|||
Rovers visit to Anfield didn't provide any points - but it did provide an exciting final quarter as Blackburn battled to try and secure at least the draw. A largely forgettable fist period saw Liverpool dominate in most areas, and Paul Robnson was the star making a number of key saves to keep Rovers in the match. But it only took 2 minutes of play after the interval for the stalemate to be broken - Sotirios Kyrgiakos with a close range shot to make it 1-0. But their lead only lasted a further 2 minutes before Benjani (on for Kalinic) turned provider for El-Hadji Diouf - deflected by Jamie Carragher who headed home to make it 1-1. But the excitement didn't stop there - another 3 minutes later it was Fernando Torres's turn to restore the home teams advantage and make it 2-1. Far from looking a beaten side - Blackburn decided to get the ball down and played some of their best football for much of the remainder of the match. However they couldn't find another goal - and the match finished with Liverpool claiming only their second win of the season and move level on 9 points with Rovers, but below them on goal difference. With Chelsea next up at Ewood on Saturday - Blackburn badly need points to avoid being sucked into the bottom three (24th October 2010) |

The French Under-21 international signs two year deal |
|||
![]() HEROLD GOULON |
Blackburn Rovers have completed the signing of 22 year old midfield man Herold Goulon from Le Mans . The under 21 French International has been at Brockhall for the past few weeks, and comes as a free agent. He's initially signed 'till Summer 2012, but Rovers have an option on an extra year should things work out well. Previously he joined Middlesbrough on a three-year-deal, but never featured in their first team. Now Big Sam says he has high hopes for his new signing, telling the clubs official website that the move was "not a big gamble - but something that could really pay off." (22nd Octoiber 2010) |

10 man Rovers secure a valuable point |
|||
![]() CHRIS SAMBA |
There were just 2 minutes of time added on at the end of the first half - and with 10 seconds left to play Chris Samba collided with Danny Welbeck and as the last man saw an instant red card right on the edge of the box. Fortunately for Rovers only a free kick was awarded - but they also knew they'd play the whole of the second half minus their captain, and with of course with only ten men. The first half had seen a couple of good chances for Rovers - including a free kick from Morten, and a header from Kalinic - Paul Robinson all made an important quality save. Both managers would probably have been happy with the 0-0 for their team talk - but for Big Sam some tactical changes were now also needed. Kalinic made way for Banjani, and Salgado was replaced by the much missed David Dunn. Benjani saw little action, before the sub had himself to be subbed when he collected a head injury and seemed to be suffering from concussion. His place was then taken by Mame Diouf - and Rovers played an enthralling final quarter trying to find a winner. Again Robinson was called upon to make a brilliant save, and in the end win his team a valuable point. He also collected the sponsors 'Man of the Match' award. Big Sam told RADIO ROVERS that the draw felt like a win. "There were a few half chances for them but big turning point was Robbo's save in the first half after a slip-up by Gael Givet on what was just a hopeful clearance.Normally Darren Bent puts those in the back of the net but Robbo, the outstanding goalkeeper that he is, is one of the key elements as to why we've got a point here today, and made a fantastic save in the second half as well. In the end, looking at the way the game went it was a well-deserved point I feel." Blackburn wait 'till next Sunday to play their next fixture - away to 19th placed Liverpool. They're have a torrid time of things - and it could be either the very best or very worst time to visit Anfield! Full commentary via the Rovers Player at rovers.co. uk (18th October 2010) |

Still no joy at the Britania |
|||
Rovers don't have a happy history at Stoke - and they added to the statistics this afternoon failing again to find the back of the Britannia net, and losing to a goal scored by a former Blackburn youngster. Both teams had their long throw stars on show, but it was always Stoke who looked the most threatening. In fact the BBC stats show 11 to 4 for attempts on target. Rovers certainly created chances in the first half but settled for a clean sheet. But it only took two minutes after the break for Jonathan Walters to score his first ever premier league goal for Stoke thanks to an assist from Matthew Etherington who might have gone on claim a hat trick for himself. In the final half hour Rovers certainly got back in the match,and matched the home side for possession. Big Sam was frustrated by the defensive error that led to the winning goal. He told the club's official website:- "It was such an easy defensive position to defend, we don't often see our central defenders mess it up like that to let what was a nothing situation develop into what was then a goalscoring situation which they took and it ended up being the winning goal ...Our deficiencies defensively have made it so easy for them to nip through and score, bog standard basic defending has let us down."
Blackburn fall to 12th - (with an International break next week) and are then home to Sunderland on Monday night (18th October) - the only home game this month. (2nd October 2010) |
