JOHNNY FLYNN |
It's
February and the window is closed
Nothing really happened!
So the January transfer window
is now closed, and for Blackburn Rovers it's been quite a
quiet month. On the final day a few players went out on loan
- but there were no new signings. It's a week ago since Johnny
Flynn came in - and Mark Hughes says the young man
impressed them when he first arrived on trail & that was
back in November. Now
he's signed for an undisclosed fee on a three-and-a-half year
deal. Bulgarian Valeri
Domovchiyski also came to Brockhall, but a possible
loan deal never materialised. Robbie
Savage was the first to leave - and joined bottom club
Derby County - surely he'll play in the Championship next
term.
Peter Enckelman joined Cardiff
City on loan for the rest of the season .. young defender
Andy Taylor left for Tranmere
Rovers - rather than Blackpool where Simon.
Grayson wanted him. Then late today Paul
Gallagher returned on loan to Stoke City and Rostyn
Griffiths joined Gretna on loan. Mark
King joined Accrington Stanley and Eddie
Nolan went on loan to Hartlepool.
So - Mark Hughes has had a
quiet month - and now prepares for a big home tie this Saturday
against Everton hoping he can continue the current run of
points in the Premier League. (1st February 2008)

JASON

New
Contract for Brown
Keeper extends his stay
Blackburn Rovers have announced
that former Charlton and Gillingham keeper has agreed to a
new deal that keeps him at Ewood Park 'till 2011. With Brad
Friedel ever present - first team starts have been hard to
come by for the 25 year old . But he made an instant impact
last season when he came on and almost immediately saved a
penalty! (See report below) Jason is a Welsh International
and according to rovers.co.uk - was more than happy to make
a new commitment to Rovers
ARCHIVE
REPORT
Blackburn Rovers 2 - Wigan 1
Another thriller at Ewood Some memories of the Man City
game came to mind - with another game of two halves. But
this time the contrast in 45's was not as great. Rovers
were stunned when Emile Heskey gave Wigan the lead after
less than two minutes ... And Rovers then spent the rest
of the half trying to get back on level terms. 1'30 into
injury time, David Bentley picked up where he left off
on Thursday with a lovely shot to make it 1-1. The second
half was all Rovers, despite the surprise sub of Brad
Friedel for new keeper Jason Brown. He's impressed pre-season,
but it was early August he last played for the first team.
With 75 mins on the clock Emile Heskey was brought down
in the box by Andre Ooijer, and the resulting penalty
made Brown the hero of the day. Wigan sub Todorov came
up to take the spot kick, but the Rovers keeper saved
it once, twice and for a third time as the rebounds came
in!! Five minutes later Benni McCarthy secured the game
for Rovers when a Chris Kirkland error left his goal invitingly
open for a simple tap in. Mark Hughes told RADIO ROVERS
"It was some game all round. The second half I thought
attacking wise we really forced the issue and really wanted
to win the game. In fairness to Wigan I thought they came
to try and win it and that was the reason it was end-to-end,
but in the end we prevailed." |
With just a couple more days of the January Window to go -
no new news on any potential ins or outs. However it looks
like any deal for the Bulgarian striker Valeri Domovchiyski
might be over. According to fansfc.com, the 21 year old will
now join Hertha Berlin. The clubs website says:-
"The two teams are expected to finalise talks on or by the
end of the transfer window." It
was thought that Mark Hughes wanted to take Valeri on loan
for the rest of the season - with an option to buy. The youngster
impressed while on trail at Brockhall.
Vitalfootball claim that Rovers could be interested in signing
Chilean International midfielder Claudio Maldonado - the 28
year old currently plays for Brazilian club Santos. (29th

ROQUE
SANTA CRUZ |
Roque
hits the target - Matt misses Pen
But Rovers claim a good point at Villa
Aston Villa 1 - 1 Blackburn Rovers
Matt Derbyshire will be disappointed
that his first quarter penalty was saved, but delighted that
for a change Rovers took the lead at Villa Park (or anywhere!)
It was 23 minutes in that Nigel Reo-Coker fouled David Bentley
and Matt Derbyshire stepped up to take the spot kick. Sadly
Scott Carson saved and the bright Rovers start was not rewarded.
The press box described Villas first half as poor, and they
made up for it with a much more attacking start to the second
half. But on 67 minutes David Dunn provided for Roque Santa
Cruz to make it 1-0 to the visitors. That's Roque's 11th in
the league and 15 in all competitions. Villa kept asking the
questions, and were rewarded with a free kick following a
foul by Steven Reid on Gabriel Agbonlahor. Ashley Young provided
the equaliser on 71 minutes from 25 yards out. 1-1 and the
chances continued for both sides - Villa hitting the wood
work - and Rovers testing Scott Carson. But it finished 1-1
and a good away point for Rovers against one of their bogey
sides.
Mark Hughes said:- "Our performance
merited a win and we also missed a penalty, which obviously
did not help. Villa Park is a difficult place to come. They
are a big strong powerful side but we matched them. We had
a nice shape and we were well organised and got some reward
for it. We are now unbeaten in six games and that is good."
This was the only Premier League game played today - and was
brought forward from next mid-week. It takes Rovers up to
8th place - 3 points behind 5th place Aston Villa. In the
reverse fixture last November at Ewood, Blackburn lost 4-0
and had Ryan Nelsen (missing through injury today) red carded.

ZURAB
KHIZANISHVILI |
Zurab
makes it three more years
Georgian agrees new deal
On
the clubs official website, Blackburn Rovers report that defender
Zurab Khizanishvili will now be at Ewood 'till 2011 after
signing a new three year contract. He originally arrived from
Rangers on loan and made the move permanent in 2006. He's
not managed to make as many starts as he'd hopes for this
season, but Mark Hughes has always claimed that the popular
player would get his
chances. Zura - now 26 - has only managed three starts this
term.
ALSO today, Setanta Sport say that Dave Mooney is currently
at Brockhall for a trial with Rovers. The sports channel say
the former Longford striker was expected to move to Cork City,
but now "could be scuppered
by the shock interest of Premier League side Blackburn Rovers."

JOHNNY
FLYNN
|
Rovers
make first new signing
Irish Defender Flynn joins
Blackburn
Rovers have confirmed that they have signed up 18 year old
Johnny Flynn from Irish Premier League club Ballymena United.
He's been described as "The
best teenage defender I have seen in the Irish League for
some time ..." by Ballymena manager Tommy
Wright. ITV Sport say that he's been on Rovers books since
November - when he first arrived on trial. Now he's signed
for an undisclosed fee on a three-and-a-half year deal. Goal.com
also quote Wright as saying:- "I
think Blackburn have got a very talented defender who is good
in the air, has a nice range of passing and has good physical
stature. He will also improve and develop with age"
There's
also a suggestion that Bulgarian striker Valeri Domovchyski
could be about to sign a loan deal for the rest of the season.
Earlier this month, the youngsters told reporters "Mark
Hughes has greeted me and made me feel more than welcome at
Blackburn. I was also very warmly welcomed by the lads in
the dressing room and I also spoke with Benni McCarthy"
ALSO news in mirror.co.uk this evening
claims that Amdy Faye has started a four-day trial at Rovers.
News last week suggested that even if Blackburn wanted to
make a move for the midfielder - new rules would preclude
him from playing for Blackburn as he's already been with two
clubs this season. Charlton own his contract, and he's on
loan at Rangers. (22nd January

MATT
DERBYSHIRE |
This
time it's super sub Derbyshire
But Rovers could only manage a draw
Blackburn Rovers
1 - 1 Middlesbrough
In the reverse fixture of the
season opener - Rovers were favourites to do the double over
Middlesbrough - but their habit of going behind thwarted the
plans. It only took the visitor 12 minutes to find the opener,
David Wheater ready to meet an incoming free kick and head
home. And despite some nice football, Rovers rarely looked
dangerous going forward, but often nervous at the back. Jason
Roberts started, and McCarthy had to settle for the bench,
but when changes came it was Matt Derbyshire who replaced
David Dunn and Brett Emerton on for Morten Gamst Pedersen.
That was on the hour, and fifteen minutes later Derbs was
in the are to tap home from 12 yards. The equaliser might
have motivated the team, but they rarely tested Mark Schwarzer,
and in the end had to settle for a home draw.
Mark Hughes told RADIO ROVERS:-"It
was a little bit flat I have to say. The first half never
really got going. It was a poor goal to concede, once again
from a set play. Once again we've conceded the first goal
and are making it difficult for ourselves. "But in the second
half we had a go, threw more people forward, we were more
dynamic, but credit to the players we got back on level terms
and who knows if something had dropped for us we might have
nicked it which probably would have been unfair to 'Boro.
"
So Rovers drop to 9th place with
37 points from 21 games. (19th January 2008)

MARK
HUGHES |
Newcastle
appoint Keegan
Our man is safe!
News from St. James' this afternoon
confirmed that Newcastle United have re-appointed their manager
from 1992 to 1997 - Kevin Keegan. After a week of speculation
which for many days had Mark Hughes as the bookies favourite
- it's great news for Rovers fans. At one stage sparky was
2-1 favourite to take over from Big Sam. Only 24 hours ago
it looked like the former Liverpool Manager Gerard Houllier
was their choice - then it was Didier Deschamps. Never far
away, former Rovers and Newcastle favourite Alan Shearer,
but this morning BBC sport quoted the now football pundit
as saying "I got a call from the
club to say they were looking for an experienced manager,
which ruled me out. If you want someone to galvanise the dressing
room, get them organised and playing then I think I could
do that."
So - as Rovers have said all along, it looks like there
was never an approach for their man. Hughes never ruled himself
out - and perhaps we'll never know if they (Newcastle) ruled
him in! (16th January 2008)

ROQUE

Santa
gets Christmas gift
Barclays player of the month for December
Rovers striker Roque Santa
Cruz has claimed the Barclays Premier League 'player of the
month' award for December. He scored a fantastic 8 in the
7 games played last month, that takes his total now to 14
- 10 league 3 League cup and 1 UEFA.
Roque told roversworld:- "I am
very honoured to receive this award, personally speaking December
was a very successful month in terms of goals, I just wish
it could have produced more positive results for the team.
I am really enjoying it at Rovers, when I arrived I set myself
the aim of scoring around fifteen goals and it has gone very
well. I am obviously hoping now that I can exceed that figure."

MARK
HUGHES |

HUGHES
TOON TAG ...
Telegraph believe Sparky is the man.
The Telegraph say that with
the failure of Newcastle United to attract the services of
Harry Rednap, the Rovers boss Mark Hughes will now be their
chosen one. The Newspaper/Website say:-
"Hughes, 44, has shot to
the top of Newcastle's list of possible replacements and it
is anticipated that Newcastle's chairman, Chris Mort, will
today make an official approach for the Welshman, who is understood
to be ready to take the chance of reviving an ailing club
....Sources at Blackburn say the club are braced for an approach
for Hughes but they are confident of retaining his services."
I suspect it's NOT the news that
Blackburn fans will want to read. In the post match
interviews at Bolton, Mark made a brilliant politician, avoiding
all the direct questions about his possible move to the North
East. He told SKY "You
keep on trying to draw the speculation out of me and it's
got nothing to do with me. As a professional football manager
speculation surrounds each and every one of us when a vacancy
comes up. All I can do is work extremely hard, like I always
have done at Blackburn Rovers."
So he didn't say no!
The next few days could be very nervous ones for Rovers fans,
players and all the staff at Ewood and Brockhall. (14th January

JASON
ROBERTS |
Roberts
gets very late winner
Super Sub finds the target on 90 minutes
Bolton Wanderers 1 - 2 Blackburn Rovers
Mark Hughes said that Rovers
have come from behind 8 times this season - so they must be
getting quite good at it!
The Lancaster derby showed a much improved Blackburn - after
the disappointment of last weeks defeat in the cup. There
were 7 changes, and some enforced absentees. Steven Reid returned
alongside David Dunn, and Andre Ooijer took over at right
back. The home side had of course lost their prize asset,
with Nicolas Anelka now at Chelsea. But it was still Bolton
who claimed first blood. A wonderful strike form Kevin Nolan
gave them the lead with just two minutes to go to the break
- Friedel could do nothing about it. But the second half saw
Rovers much more committed, and when Chris Samba headed home
the equaliser on 53'00 - it was nothing more than they deserved.
Blackburn could easily have scored more - Morten Gamst Pedersen
put his shot wide, as did David Dunn. Roque came close too
and David Bentley offered some excellent crosses that deserved
more. But it took 'till the 90th minute for sub Jason Roberts
(on for McCarthy 76'00) to come up with the winner. His solo
effort followed a well crafted run from the half way line,
and was his first goal in the league this season.
Mark Hughes told reporters:- "Jason's
been really frustrated with a lack of opportunities but you've
got to bide your time. At times you have to get your head
down and work in training, get fit and then ask questions
of the manager - he's certainly given me food for thought.
He's frustrated but he knows there's a part to play here,
he knows we're not trying to force him out, we want him to
stay and we've said that in no uncertain terms."
The win puts Rovers just 3 points
behind 4th placed Liverpool. (13th January 2008)

KOUMAS |
Wigan
man to replace Savage?
Hughes targets Koumas
The Independent report that Mark Hughes has identified Wigan's
Jason Koumas as a replacement for Robbbie Savage. The Welsh
International Midfielder received his first cap for Wales
under Hughes, and the paper says the Blackburn manager is
a big fan. They believe that Rovers will offer £3 million
to bring him to Ewood Park. On the downside, Wigan paid over
£5 million to West Brom only last Summer for a player
who'd been a long term target.
But the Telegraph say "it
is understood that Koumas does not feature in manager Steve
Bruce's plans ... Hughes hopes to complete a deal before Sunday's

MARK
HUGHES |
Don't
do it!
Sparky linked with Newcastle job
As speculation grew today over the next man to take on the
untenable job as Manager of Newcastle United, Mark Hughes
was installed as second favourite by the bookies. The story
emanated from the local Tyneside paper, where their backpage
headline claimed Hughes was in the frame. The Toon army never
accepted Big Sam as the right man for their top job, and many
would like to see former Rover Alan Shearer take over now.
Despite their physical size and gates over over 50 thousand,
the famous club has failed to pick up any silverware for over
half a century. Their fans also like attacking football, and
if possible SHEARER waiting to pounce to score another wonder
goal. Now he's hung up his boots in favour of a BBC microphone,
those same fans fancy giving the Geordie hero the top job.
If not him, or Harry Rednap, or the return of Kevin Keegan,
some also fancy the reliable, professional Blackburn Manager
- our very own Mark Hughes. In the words of today's Lancashire
Telegraph - "Sparky must stay"!
Don't do it Mark - we need you (ed) Let them sort out their
own problems! (10th January 2008)

fansfc.com quote Mark Hughes distancing himself from the Newcastle
United job:-
"There's always speculation when
any big job comes up. I seem to be talked about in good terms
and I'm appreciative of that but it's just recognition of
the work myself and my staff do here. I have not spoken to
anyone from Newcastle, I spoke to my chairman last night and
he has had no contact, and I don't think there will be any
contact. I am in a very strong position here. I have a great
relationship with the chairman and the board and that is really
important. When managers have that relationship it's a big
decision to forego that as the relationship is the key to
whether we can be successful."
ALSO The Daily Express reports that a source close to the
process of hiring a new manager for Newcastle United said:
"Hughes was put forward but Newcastle
were not interested." (12th January 2008)

Three
More to Go ...
Two Transfers, One loan
It's reported that Rovers keeper
Peter Enckelman has joined Cardiff City on loan for the rest
of the season - and is likely to go straight into their squad
for this Saturday. He's only managed two Premier League starts
for the club, and Jason Brown is the reserve keeper on the
bench. Peter came to Blackburn from Aston Villa under Graeme
Souness, and cost just £150K.
Also on the move is young defender Andy Taylor. The 21 year
old has been on loan at Tranmere Rovers recently and it's
reported that Blackburn have received two acceptable bids
for the player. Last January in the transfer window, Andy
went out on a three month loan to Huddersfield Town. But it
was Simon Grayson's Blackpool who had high hopes of signing
Andy, and the Seasiders website quote the Manager as saying:
"We agreed a fee with Blackburn the
other day and we got close to doing a deal but unfortunately
Andy decided that he would be better off going elsewhere just
through being able to play more football. He said to me the
other day when we spoke, he's been waiting for the opportunity
to come back to Blackpool for the last 18 months or so - it
hasn't happened for whatever reason and he just felt that
at this time in his career that he needed to go and play football,
and that's what he's going to do. I'm disappointed to lose
him but I can fully understand the lad's position that he's
in and also, it would have been a hard position for him to
get into with Stephen Crainey playing so well this year."
And Thursday evening saw news from SKY that Accrington
Stanley have captured Mark King on a free from Rovers. Following
some serious injuries - he never made the first team.
SKY say "King has agreed a contract until the end
of the season as he looks to convince John Coleman he is worthy
of a longer deal." (10th January 2008)

Looks Likely??
South African could be first signing
A number of websites report
that Mark Hughes is ready to sign 22 year old South African
midfielder Lance Davids. Tribalfootball say
"Davids has already had successful
trials at Ewood Park and Hughes is now discussing a fee with
the midfielder's Swedish employers." He
is currently with Djurgårdens IF from Stockholm - and moved
there from TSV 1860 München in Germany in 2006. During the
2007 season, Davids played on the right wing as a midfielder
or as a defender. The young star was born in Capetown and
won 22 caps for South Africa's U-23 team. On his visit to
Brockhall will have met up with fellow South Africans Benni
McCarthy and Aaron Mokoena. It's also understood that Newcastle
United have recently had him on trial - but today's news that
Sam Allardyce is no longer the clubs Manager might halt
any potential moves from the Tynesiders. With Robbie Savage
now at Derby County, there's room for another midfield man
and some money in the bank from Robbies sale. (9th January

Rams manager Paul Jewell told
BBC Radio Derby: "Robbie is massively
keen to come. Hopefully he will be at the training ground
later on Tuesday. This club lacks a bit of devilment and Robbie
will bring that to the club. But he can also play a bit and
he will have a positive effect on the team and the fans. He

Robbie as saying of the move to the bottom club in the Premier

who are fighting a relegation battle, but maybe my fighting
qualities, both as a player and a person, might come in handy."

MARK
HUGHES |
NOT
a good day at the office
Rovers booted out of the FA Cup
Blackburn Rovers
1-4 Coventry City
After what looked like a solid
enough start - with Rovers under no threat for half an hour
- Coventry City broke and Michael Mifsud scored his first
of two FA Cup goals at Ewood. 0-1 down at the break and expectations
were that Rovers changed look side (Treacy, Burner and Rigters
all started) would soon be back on level terms. Sadly just
the reverse was true - and after a little more urgency Zurab
Khizanishvili fouled Leon Best on the goal line and Elliott
Ward scored from the spot to make it 0-2! From this point
on it all got very scrappy - the intended sub of Gamst for
Treacy canceled and instead an injured Brett Emerton came
off. Next Maceo Rigters was replaced by Ryan Nelsen, and the
formation was anyone's guess. Chris Samba went up front with
Benni McCarthy and other players seemed unsure of just where
they should be. At the second attempt Treacy did go off -
but a half fit Matt Derbyshire came on to bolster the attack.
Sadly all to no avail as Dele Adebola made it 0-3 in the 82nd
minute ... Thankfully a few moments later David Bentley claimed
one back fir the disheveled Rovers (1-3) and it looked like
a let attach might salvage something. But it was not
to be and Michael Mifsud claimed his second deep into injury
time. 1-4 the resulting scoreline, and Coventry convincingly
through to the 4th round. The RADIO ROVERS inbox was filled
with emails from unhappy fans - as texts and phone calls added
to the post match misery.
Mark Hughes admitted it was all a bitter disappointment:-
"I thought Coventry were excellent
and fully deserved their win. They seemed to want it more
than we did. Our second-half performance was very disappointing
and in many aspects it was unacceptable. I'm not going to
hide behind any excuses like injuries or team selection, for
we had enough out there to have put on a much better show
than that. I can understand the fans' frustrations, they have
been used to some good times in cup competitions here - with
a couple of FA Cup semi-finals in the last three seasons -
but this was not one of them."
So no more cup glory this
season - with Europe and the two domestic competitions now
all gone. Mark Hughes now faces his toughest test - to turn
round the fortunes in the league and add to the back to back
wins with the trip to Bolton next weekend. Incidentally, both
they and Everton were also dumped out this afternoon. (5th

A
tale of two penalties
One saved - one scored
Blackburn Rovers
1-0 Sunderland
A clean sheet, taking the lead
and all three points! So the perfect way to start the New
Year - but not much quality in tonight's game at a very windy
Ewood Park. The first half is better forgotten - a chance
for David Bentley from a free kick about all worth mentioning.
Scrappy and to Sunderlands credit a half they seemed to control.
After the break there seemed more determination in Rovers
play but they had to play without Roque Santa Cruz who didn't
return after suffering a groin strain. In his place Matt Derbyshire
joined Benni up front - then on 67 minutes Matt too was replaced
by David Dun after he too picked up an injury (hip). In between
a couple of penalties - firstly Chris Samba fouled Daryl Murphy
and Dean Whitehead stepped up to take the awarded pen. It
wasn't the best and Brad Friedel made a little bit of history
making the first penalty save of 2008 - after claiming the
last of 2007! Just five minutes later a handball by Danny
Higginbotham gave Rovers their spot kick and Benni McCarthy
made no mistake burying the ball in the back of Sunderlands
net. The match saw the return to Ewood of two former Rovers
- Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke, but Dwight collected two yellows
and saw red with 20 minutes to go, while Andy came on as a
late sub but made no impact.
So 7 points from three - and back to back wins ... It wasn't
pretty - but the New Year started well - long may it continue!
Mark Hughes told RADIO ROVERS:- "Conditions
were very difficult, making it hard for both teams."Sunderland
worked hard to close us down and the outcome rested on two
penalties.
Thankfully Brad saved theirs and Benni scored ours. We will
take the points and move on. We usually have to play really
well to win Premier League games, but that was not the case
here. We could not get our passing game going, but a win is
a win."
But the win comes at a cost - with those injuries to Roque
and Matt added to with news that Jason Roberts is also injured
having picked up a foot problem yesterday. So the cup game
on Saturday will provide the Manager with some serious thinking
about who will play up front. The result sees Rovers remain
9th with 33 points - just three away from a top six place
- and a zero goal difference! (2nd January 2008)
