This time it's the Gunners game |

![]() MAME DIOUF |
Big Sam surprised many with a starting eleven which saw Mame Biram Diouf up front with Niko Kalinic. The duo offering something different for Rovers - and something to think about for Arsenal. Mame 's first start in the Carling Cup aslo saw the on loan striker score his first Blackburn hat trick - and today he picked up where he left off. But it was some well constructed build up play from Arsenal that led to Theo Walcott claiming the first goal of the game. Robin van Persie providing the ball in, in the 20th minute. But six minutes later it was Blackburn who were celebrating when the Diouf's joined up for the equaliser. El Hadji Diouf had already proved a range of passes before he offered the younger Mame Diouf the perfect ball for his Rovers first league goal. And for the rest of the half it was the home team who looked the most likely to add a second. But Big Sam was probably happy enough with the 1-1 at the break, and hoped for more of the same in part two. The message in the visitors dressing room must have been to step up the tempo, and it only took them five minutes to take the lead again, this time through Andrey Arshavin collected Theo Walcott's ball to strike home from 12 yards out. Rovers brought on David Dunn, Martin Olsson and Steven Nzonzi ... Grella, Kalinic and Mame Diouf making way. David Dunn came close to claiming the equaliser . But this time - the 2-1 scoreline favoured the visitors - the reverse of Rovers win in the equivalent fixture last season. The Manager was more than pleased with the performance - but equally disappointed with the result, telling RADIO ROVERS:- "We worked very hard on a game plan about Arsenal holding a high line and playing ball down the sides and in behind which was evident that we were getting success there and we should have capitalised on it more ... Our creative side of our game was good, Diouf's goal was fantastic, Diouf to Diouf and after that we had chances to get in the lead to get what I felt we deserved at half time.... From then it was nip and tuck but we didn't create as much in the second half as we did in the first but you can't expect to be creating all the time against Arsenal." And Big Sam admitted "The disappointing thing is that we haven't got a result from what was a pretty good performance against one of the top sides in the league." So now with an International break Rovers have collected just 3 points from the opening 3 games of this campaign. They'll have to wait 'till 11th September for the next game - away at Manchester City (28th August 2010) |

Mame Mia! Hat-trick Hero Diouf |
|||
![]() MAME DIOUF |
He could have scored half a dozen - but had to settle for just three on debut. Mame Biram Diouf made his first Blackburn Rovers start as a solo striker for the 2nd round of the Carling Cup - and finished with the match ball, man of the match and a hat-trick hero!! He didn't do it all himself and must thank Morten Gamst Pedersen for more than a few assists, and Armine Linganzi was also unlucky not to add to the tally. Perhaps with Arsenal in mind at the weekend and a few injuries waiting to heal, Big Sam chose to make a few key changes to his eleven who faced Norwich City in the Cup. He also gave Paul Robinson the night off and Mark Bunn played all 90 minutes in goal. It was never a night of high drama, and Sam might have fancied a few more goals - but only a 90th minute consolation for Askou gave the 400 traveling Canary fans anything to shout about. Diouf hit the target in the 28th, 78th and 83rd minute ... and the manger seemed satisfied with the nights work. Post match he told RADIO ROVERS "It was obviously a comfortable performance by the way we played ... We got the one goal in the first half and it should have been more, then had a bad spell after we scored and Norwich came into the game a little bit. Then I think as the second half progressed we started to probe more and more and that spell just before we scored the second was one of the best attacking and constant pressures we've put on any team for a long time. We were even more free flowing after that and then Mame scored one on the far post and he's got a hat-trick . So we've had a really good night." The draw for the third round takes place just ahead of Rovers next game at Ewood on Saturday lunchtime against Arsenal. All the details live on RADIO ROVERS around 12:30 BST. (24th August 2010) |

All the - none of the points again at St. Andrews |
|||
![]() STEVEN NZONZI |
For Rovers first away game - it was Saturday at St. Andrews ... a place they've had little successover recent years. It was a Saturday afternoon away - and Big Sam has a poor record playing games away from Ewood on a Saturday! But the first half showed what Rovers could do - and they were certainly the better side - despite going in at the break 0-0. Ben Foster ready for anything that Blackburn created.
The second half started with a perfect opportunity for Blackburn - Chris Samba adjudged to have been fouled in the box, and Morten Gamst Pedersen was on hand to put the ball on the spot. Sadly for Morton, Ben Foster again made a wonderful save to deny Rovers. But they didn't need to wait long for their second chance - and this time Pedersen tuned provider from the corner to the near post and Steven Nzonzi was on hand to head home. 0-1 and Rovers went top of the 'virtual' table - for three minutes! Craig Gardner restoring the balance with an equaliser for Birmingham as Paul Robinson was beaten for the first time this season. Niko Kalinic had a great chance blocked by the Birmingham keeper and then hit the woodwork! From distance Craig Gardner took a shot and claimed his second and what tuned out to be the Birmingham winner.
Former Blckburn favourite Matt Derbyshire did come off the bench for his new side - as he started his one year loan deal. He was fouled by Ryan Nelsen who picked up a yellow for his trouble! Welcome back Matt. The Rovers manager will be at a loss to work out how his team came back pointless - but the final score of 2-1 says all you need to know. Big Sam told reporters that he was very happy with the over all performance and very disappointed with the result. He paid tribute to Ben Foster saying that the Birmingham keeper won them the game. Nice one Niko! |

![]() NIKOLA KALINIC |
Blackburn Rovers opened their season at Ewood Park with a 1-0 win over the Toffees - and it was all down to some quick thinking and sloppy keeping! Rovers were fastest out of the box, and could have been ahead after just 2 minutes when Martin Olsson came very close. After 8 minutes things looked bad for David Dunn, as the Ewood favourite had to be replaced by Steven Nzonzi after feeling his groin. Then with less then 14 minutes on the new season clock - Everton keeper Tim Howard collected a cross and dropped the ball giving Niko the chance to claim his first of the new season. The ball trickled into the Darwen End net - and also gave the Blackburn striker the honour of scoring the Premier Leagues first goal of the campaign! There were chances later for sub Mame Biram Diouf (on for Kalinic in the 60th minute) and Nzonzi - but at the other end Paul Robinson had a very quiet afternoon with the Rovers defense keeping all 'incoming' well away from his net. The opening tie was dedicated to the memory of Jack Walker - who passed away exactly 10 years ago. The result a fitting tribute to his legacy - and an afternoon of entertainment Jack would have approved of. |

Tributes and memories of Jack Walker 10 years on |
|||
![]() JACK WALKER |
It was a year ago this coming week that Blackburn heard the sad news of the death of Jack Walker. The former steel man had already provided the club with the resources to build a team for the new Premier League - build a news stadium at Ewood Park - take the title in 1994-5 and then develop the Brockhall training ground. Today floral tributes surrounded his statue at the Blackburn end of the ground. Click the links below to see some pictures and see the tributes page from 10 years ago in our archive.
