Tottenham 2

-0 Blackburn Rovers

The long goodbye - is almost over.
Rovers Shirt
If Rovers had a game plan at Spurs it wasn't obvious. QPR had just been beaten 6-1 over at Chelsea, and Wigan collected maximum points yesterday - so it looked likely that Blackburn would play some attacking football and at a club who've had a poor few, moths by their standards. Well it was Tottenham who dominated play from start to finish, creating all the chances, claiming all the possession. Chance after chance were created before Van der Vaart's ball crossed the line to make it 1-0 with 22minutes gone. Rovers protested that it hadn't - but despite the melee, they hadn't kept it out. No changes at the break, and no surprise when Kyle Walker made it 2-0 in the 75th. Yakubu replaced by Modeste, Goodwillie on for Dunny, but still no chances created on a lackluster afternoon from teh visitors.
So Wigan on Bank Holiday Monday and then away at Chelsea before the season, and most probably their time in the top flight, comes to an end.
PLEASE tune into RADIO ROVERS on 7th May for our last broadcast (of the season?) as we say a fond farewell to a year that's best to forget. (29th April 2012)

Must win - won! Vitall three points and a clean sheet
Mauro FormicaJunior Hoilett
FORMICA & HOILETT
With just four game to go, the manager and fans agreed - this was another MUST win game. Thankfully this time everyone was reading from the same script, and two changes saw Gael Givet recalled, and the return of Mauro Forminca. Givet went on to collect the 'man of the match', while Mauro scored Blackburn's first goal of the afternoon. Norwich City had put Rovers under plenty of first half pressure - and missed some clear chances. Yakubu hit the woodwork with a spectacular overhead kick, then with five minutes to the break Morten Gamst Pedersen provided the cross, and Formica found the back of the visitors net. One up and a happy half time. Rovers re-started as they'd finished , and just three minutes into the second period 'Junior' Hoilett fired home a fantastic long range strike with a shot destined to be 'goal of the day'. There were other chances, and the Canaries tried hard to find some sort of reply, but Rovers hung on for a vital three points and helpful clean sheet.
Steve Kean told RADIO ROVERS
"We scored at good times, just before half time and just after, it knocked the wind out of the sails of the opposition and it always looked like it might be us who would get further goals rather than Norwich. Morten has that quality with his delivery and then Gato makes the strike look easier than it was, it was a great goal. But what can you say about Junior? He can produce that, he did something similar down at Carrow Road and when it leaves his foot it is only going in one place and that is the top corner. We now go to White Hart Lane and we have to perform once again, there are three cup finals remaining and we want something from every game."
Despite the win Blackburn stay in the bottom three, but move up one as Bolton dropped one with a home draw against Swansea. The late game saw ten man QPR beat Spurs to move 3 points clear and up to 16th. Wigan lost at home to Fulham and fell to 17th. They come to Ewood on Bank Holiday Monday evening for the final home game of the season, and next Sunday Rovers are in London to take on Tottenham. (21st April 2012)

Another fine mess - this time in Wales
Rovers Shirt
Rovers returned to the Country that had happy memories of a Cup Final win in Cardiff - but at Swansea there were no celebrations for the English. In simple terms Blackburn were well beaten with two goals ahead of the break and yet another own goal to seal their fate in the second half. Both sides were on the back of a set of recent defeats - but the Premiership new boys showed why they had won so many plaudits all season, and their win sees them top the 40 point mark to surely enjoy another one in the top flight. Sigurdson claimed the home sides' first after 36 minutes, Nathan Dyer made it two eight minutes later. Just past the hour Sigurdson struck the post, and Scott Dann put the ball into his own net. Pundits say Rovers looked like a beaten side and one already resigned to the drop. Steve Kean told the BBC "It was tough afternoon. At 0-0 I thought we contained them well. I felt when we won it back we were loose in our possession and not as potent as we have been. But Swansea pressed very well when we won it back. We thought the first goal there was potentially a foul in the build-up. But no doubt it's a fantastic finish." Worryingly the Manager also revealed why Gael Givet was left out of the squad, but traveled to Swansea. Apparently it was a 'state of mind' issue. Steve Kean told the Rovers website: "I spoke to Gael this morning and after having a chat with him it was very apparent to me that he was nowhere near in the right mindset to be involved in this game. I don't want to go into the reasons why, we'll keep that private, but there was no way he could have been on the pitch today. We needed him, we wanted him to play, but after the chat it was obvious that it wasn't going to be the case."
Now with just four games to go, it looks likely that Blackburn will need to win three of them - and next week they face Norwich City at Ewood, ahead of a tough trip to Tottenham, then Wigan as the last home game and the last day of the season back in London at Chelsea. They remain second bottom, and it's hard to see how they'll escape the bottom three. (14th April 2012)

Blackburn Rovers 2

-3 Liverpool

Rovers sunk by injury time goal, and stay in the drop zone .
Yakubu
YAKUBU
On a positive note, Yakubu added two more goals to his tally for the season, that after missing a penalty. On a negative one, Andy Carroll scored in injury time to rob Rovers of anything from the game adter playing for an hour with ten men. Liverpool had started brightly, with Maxi Rodriguez scoring in the 12th and 15th minute to give the visitors what looked like an unassailable 2-0 lead. But then 25 minutes in, in a game to be littered with cards, Alexander Doni saw a straight red when he brought down Junior Hoillett. Yakubu stepped up to take the penalty against Liverpool's 3rd choice keeper - and sub Brad Jones saved. But The Yak was back in the goals ten minutes later when David Dunn provided a great free kick and Rovers top scored calmly headed home. After the break Rovers continued to look for a second and this time it was Liverpool sub keeper who was responsible for fouling Yakubu. This time the Yak had no trouble putting it away from the spot. So 2-2 and a point that would see Rovers out of the bottom three. But with four minutes of extra time signaled Andy Carroll headed the winner for Liverpool with 91 minutes on the watch. A very tough way to be beaten. Ten man Liverpool picked up a useful win, while Rovers continued to struggle finding the points that could save their Premier League status. Talking to RADIO ROVERS, Steve Kean said: "It is a cruel one to take because we've done well to get back in the game considering we've missed a penalty. I can understand why the referee hasn't sent off the second goalkeeper because maybe Yakubu's touch is taking the ball back towards a Liverpool player so we'll live with that one. But we feel that there was a blatant foul on Grant Hanley on their last goal. Grant is in a bit of a skirmish with Skrtel, he's tried to get back up and he's pulled to the floor by Skrtel and therefore he can't get back up to get to the centre of the goal. It ends up with Agger heading it to Carroll to a place where Hanley would have been. I've seen it a number of times and it is a blatant foul. That has cost us a point, a point that would have taken us up a couple of places such as how close it is at the bottom."
So it's on to Swansea on Saturday, and then Norwich at Ewood Park. Just five games left and points desperately needed. (10th April 2012)

Red Card, Own Goal, no points - Bad Day for Rovers
Anthony Modeste
ANTHONY MODESTE
It might not have been a 'must win' for Rovers, but certainly it was a game not to lose. But it ended as a bad defeat and Anthony Modeste saw Red and will now miss three games - perhaps not to play again for Blackburn. Things didn't start well, with Martin Olsson conceding an unfortunate own goal with just six minutes gone. In fact the first half was one largely to forget, with the home side claiming most of the play. Things had to improve, and did .. for a period in part two Rovers looked likely to find an equaliser and even go on to win. They had a good penalty claim turned down when Bradley Orr was pushed in the box, and Ben Foster was on top form, to make a double save and keep Rovers at bay. Fortune made it 2-0 and Liam Ridgewell added a third with five minutes to go. Then with a the final whistle only minutes away Anthony Modeste saw a straight red for kicking out at Billy Jones. Steve Kean admitted that Blackburn probably lost it in tie fist half - and now looks ahead to Liverpool on Tuesday. He told reporters: "We were poor in the first half but came out more positive in the second half. The big point was the double save. I felt if we had scored that, with the momentum and possession, the score would have been very different. It is a very fine line. I've looked at the stats and we had 11 goal attempts and seven or eight on target. The goalkeeper has had a good day. "We have a massive game against Liverpool now on Tuesday."
Other results saw Bolton lose 3-0 at home to Fulham, Wigan lose 2-1 at Chelsea and Wolves lose 2-1 at Stoke. QPR will play Manchester United on Sunday, but stand ahead of Rovers on goal difference just outside the bottom three, (7th April 2012)

So close - but no reward aganst the Reds
Rovers Shirt
It was never going to be an easy evening at Ewood, but Blackburn looked determined to try and stifle United's title hopes. And for most of the ninety minutes they did just that - testing De Gea at one end, while Paul Robinson was up to any shot at the other. Rovers were unlucky not to go in for the break at least a goal to the good, but the United keeper was on form, and certainly much improved from his performance against Rovers at Old Trafford. The second half saw more from the home side, but the Reds claimed much of the possession. With ten minutes left, it was beginning to look like a valuable point for Blackburn could be on the cards, but Valencia had other ideas as he threaded home through a rack of defenders to beat Robinson and take the lead. Then less then five minutes later Ashley Young came of the bench to make it two, and game over.
Certainly no disgrace for Blackburn, but the goal deficit pushed them back into the bottom three with games running out.
Post match Steve Kean told RADIO ROVERS : "I'm frustrated and disappointed. For 80 minutes I thought we were excellent, we were right in the game, we created plenty of chances. We were compact, we were sharp and De Gea has made some outstanding saves. From our point of view we have to think about how we played for 80 minutes, now we need to stretch it to 90 minutes.... All we've got to do is make that the standard of performance and if we play like that in the last seven games then the points will come."
And that challenge comes next at West Brom on Saturday, before Liverpool come to Ewood next Tuesday evening. (3rd April 2012)
