AT LAST! First home win since January - Must win - Did Win
Martin Olsson
MARTIN OLSSON
Rovers biggest home crowd of the season came to Ewood Park for a 'must win' Lancashire derby. After Mondays big disappointment at home to Manchester City - this time the battling performance had the desired result. Once again a single goal decided it - but thankfully this time it went Rovers way. Blackburn showed their intent from the first minutes when they came close to beating the Bolton keeper - then the visitors almost took the advantage - but in end-to-end fast paced action the scoresheet remained 0-0. That was until the 20th minute when Michel Salgado turned provider and Martin Olsson claimed his second of the season to the delight of a packed ground. Not much later, the youngster looked to have picked up a serious injury when even a stretcher was brought on. But thankfully he recovered on the sidelines and returned to action. He tested stand in keeper Adam Bogdan, who continued to find his box a busy area. Rovers kept up the pressure for the rest of the half and the challenge then must have been to keep up the good work after the interval. Bolton showed more determination - but Blackburn continued to find ways through to the opposition area. They seemed to have one chance after another, and in the end racked up 8 shots on target, 9 off - also claiming 55% possession. Steve Kean made just one change to replace the injured David Dunn with the returning Steven Nzonzi . Later Mame Diouf replaced Michel Salgado who was stretchered off but later told RADIO ROVERS that " a pint of bear" would sort him out! Morten Gamst Pedersen came on for Jason Roberts, and Nikola Kalinic came on for Benjani - all in the final 30 minutes. Bolton failed to ever seriously challenge Rovers defense - Blackburn never stopped testing theirs.
It was back at the end of January that they last celebrated a home win - and in bright spring sunshine the result almost secured their Premier league future. Now on 38 points with 3 to play and next week away at bottom side West Ham.
Steve Kean was delighted with the win and told RADIO ROVERS:- "It was the biggest crowd of the season, the biggest noise, and of course the biggest goal, I'm totally delighted... We gave the fans the result, I thought they were tremendous against Manchester City last Monday, they stayed with us then and today they stayed with us and they were superb, hopefully they will have gone home happy.I thought our attitude and application was tremendous. I wanted us to go and get the second to make us comfortable but it was never that, we had the chances but they didn't come. Our goal difference is very healthy, we've got three games left and we are going all out to quickly get beyond the forty-point mark." (30th April 2011)

Didn't deserve to loose - and more controversy at Ewood
Phil Jones
PHIL JONES
When City brought on their £27 million man Edin Dzeko - who was yet to open his account for the club - you just knew he'd be the man to spoil a good night for Rovers! Not that the visitors hadn't already come close to taking the lead - just 3 minutes into this crucial North West Derby. The game started with plenty of possession and pressure from City, and Silva looked certain to score when he took a shot from just outside the box and instead struck the post. In fact for the first half of the first half Blackburn struggled to get much of the ball - but from that point on they showed what they should be capable off. Phil Jones went on a long run and his enthusiasm seemed to kick Rovers into action. 0-0 at the break was only what they deserved - and possibly more when they had already had a penalty appeal rejected when Jason Roberts appeared to be fouled by Vincent Kompany. They continued to put the visitors under pressure after the break - with Jones and Samba both coming close, Jermaine Jones hitting the side netting. Just 3 minutes after coming off the bench Dzeko broke the deadlock - but City seemed to have another player active in an off side position - the goal stood. A further penalty appeal was ignored in injury time when Nikola Kalinic went down under a challenge. Not surprisingly Rovers felt hard done by, and felt certain they should have at least shared the points. Jason Roberts started up front with Benjani. Mame Diouf and Niko Kalinic replaced them in the final quarter. David Dunn was also subbed when he seemed to pick up an injury. Ruben Rochina took his place and set up Phil Jones who headed over the bar. The Rovers youngster obviously impressed - picking up the sponsors 'Man of the Match' award.
Talking to RADIO ROVERS after the game Steve Kean spoke of his frustration "It is very very tough to take as I thought we were magnificent. If there was anybody that looked likely to score it was going to be us. We had a little bit of a tough time in the first 15 minutes but I thought we finished the first half really well. .... In the second half we came out of the blocks really well and if anybody was going to score then it was going to be us, we'd pinned them back well." Steve Kean also believed that the Dzeko goal it shouldn't have stood as Mario Balotelli impeded Paul Robinson's view when offside. An opinion shared with RADIO ROVERS by the Rovers keeper. Kean said "We are disappointed with a couple of decisions as well because we feel that the goal was offside. Paul Robinson is a very honest player and he said that he had to gamble, to dive to see where the ball was going to be because he couldn't actually see it because Balotelli is stood right right in front of him. So that is one tough decision to take and then at the other end we have Niko Kalinic who gets bumped but he is honest enough to stay on his feet and he doesn't get the decision. In the first half Jason Roberts is clipped, but having seen it again there is a little bit of a delay before he went down, but I don't know if that is as much of a penalty as the Niko Kalinic one."
Blackburn have just 5 days 'till they are back in action at Ewood - Bolton Wanderers the next task in what must now be a 'must win' game. (25th April 2011)

Everton 2-

Bitter blow at the Toffees
Ruben Rochina
RUBEN ROCHINA
A first start of Ruben Rochina, and some positive play in the first half wasn't matched by a second period dominated by the home side as Rovers lost 2-0 to Everton and piled on the pressure as they try to avoid the drop. The first half was nothing to right home about - but Blackburn defended well and would have been happy to reach the break with a clean sheet. But it only took 9 minutes after the return for Leon Osman to put the first past Paul Robinson, and from then on Everton made it very hard for the visitors. With an hour gone Jason Roberts replaced Roque Santa Cruz, then Gael Givet went off and Morten Gamst Pedersen took his place. But little changed and few chances were created. Then a penalty was awarded for a foul by Phil Jones on Seamus Coleman, and Leighton Baines scored from the spot.As a last throw of the dice Benjani came on for Rochina who'd made little impact in the second half. According to the stats Rovers only registered two attempts on target and 2 off - with 7 & 10 the equivalent for Everton.
Steve Kean told reporters "I thought there were massive positives for us in the first half so we're disappointed by the manner of the goals we've conceded. But we'll move on. Our away statistics aren't great but our belief is not shattered. Our team spirit has been called upon but we've got that in abundance. We must try to build some momentum, starting with our next game against Manchester City."
And it's City live on TV as an Easter Monday night treat from Ewood - followed by another home must win against Bolton a fortnight today. And one other fixture should now be confirmed - Manchester United will NOT be busy on Saturday 14th May - as they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester City at Wembey 1-0. United should now play Rovers in the final home fixture of the season live on SKY at 12:15 that afternoon. (16th April 2011)

Ryan Op and out for

the rest of the season

Nelsen goes under the knife
Ryan Nelsen
RYAN NELSEN
Club captain Ryan Nelsen underwent surgery this week and will now miss the rest of the season . The Rovers veteran had to be subbed last week at home to Birmingham City, and the Manager now admits "If the surgeon had looked at his knee in January he'd have had the same op, so our medical team have done well to keep him on the pitch for so long."
The operation cleared out 'floating debris' in his knee - and it's now hoped that Ryan will be back for the start of next season . Luckily for Blackburn Phil Jones has just returned to full action after he too had a big lay off with a leg injury. Steve Kean told BBC Radio Lancashire "Fortunately for us Phil Jones is back fully fit. He's slotted in and looked as though he'd never been away from central defence so that's fantastic for us." None the less the loss will only add to the pressure that Rovers are under hoping to avoid relegation after a long run of disappointing results in 2011. (14th April 2011)

Blackburn Rovers 1 -

Another point closer - in frustrating draw
'Junior' Hoilett
JUNIOR HOILETT
In less than a minute Rovers looked likely to open the scoring - they were at it again only minutes later - but it was Lee Bowyer who was first to break the deadlock in a disputed goal for the visitors. Most fans - and the manager believed there was a foul in the build up - and that the Birmingham man was off side as he scored from close range. But the goal stands. That's more than many of the players did. A succession of tumbles saw more fallers than in the Grand National! When the first half was about to enter injury time a clash of heads saw Roger Johnson go down with a head in jury and more minutes had to be added. As soon as play restarted 'Junior' Hoilett placed one past Ben Foster to level the scores as the clock past 51 minutes. The stats show Blackburn 10 to 1 up on 'attempts of target' and 5-5 for those on target. They won the corner count too 8-2. Sadly the second half failed to bring any more goals and the game ended as the first half had with the points shared and 1-1 the final score. For Blackburn there were also worries of injuries to Ryan Nelson and Junior Hoilett - both had to be replaced. Ryan after just half an hour and Junior after 70 minutes. Both will be much missed if their injuries prove to be long term.
A frustrated Steve Kean told reporters:
"I wanted to take a big leap today but we're taking little steps and we just have to keep chipping away. If all the teams around you pick up wins and you only get a point you're massively disappointed. But today we are probably a little bit better off than when we started. The atmosphere in the dressing room is really down. But we will soon come to realise that this is a good point today."
With the other results broadly going in Rovers favour they stayed 14th now with 35 points and have drawn the last three games. 2-2, 0-0 and 1-1. Next week it's a tough trip to Everton before a Bank Holiday Monday night derby at Ewood against Manchester City. Six games left and probably 6 points needed for safety.

First ever point at The Emirates as 10 man Rovers earn a vital draw.
Martin Olsson
MARTIN OLSSON

Rovers have never had much to celebrate in London. Just 1 point from a potential 30 in the past - and none at The Emirates. So with Rovers just one point outside the bottom three after earlier games the pressure was really on to do something special. Arsenal also needed a good result with their challenge in second place to try and catch up Manchester United. But early signs didn't look good as the home side pushed Blackburn back and tested the defense for the first quarter hour. But then Rovers came to life and as well as holding the gunners at bay, they also tested their keeper and created plenty of chances. With the interval score at 0-0 Steve Keane must have had some good things to say in the dressing room. Part two saw more impressive performances from the visitors and despite having shots on target, Arsenal failed to beat Paul Robinson. A potential turning point saw Steven Nzonzi shown red for his tackle on on Laurent Koscielny. Replays failed to show why Mr. Dowd chose that colour - but now it was 10 men who had to hold on for the final fifteen minutes. And that's just what they did - to earn an historic and vital point in the capitol.
Talking to reporters after the game, Rovers manager Steve Kean was delighted with the result. He pointed to the team efforts saying "We've shown commitment , we've shown how much we wanted to get something from the game. Going down to ten men was a challenge . The key thing for us was that the mid field three handled the Arsenal mid field so well."
The Barclays man of the match went to Martin Olsson for his defensive efforts - but all the team deservedit. No doubt the Sunday papers will point to the failure of Arsenal to break down Blackburn. It was also the Gunners third successive league draw, with Rovers having the worst defensive record away from home in the Premier League.
Birmingham City pulled clear of the bottom three with a 2-1 win over Bolton - they too now have 34 points and come to Ewood next Saturday at 3.00 pm. Surely now a must win match for Blackburn.
