BBC Radio Blackburn - The Early Years

BBC Radio Blackburn
(now BBC Radio Lancashire)
Car sticker 2 (and I one of these - in fact I still do)
John Musgrave (the first Manager) BBC Radio Blackburn went on air at midday on January 26th 1971. As one of the original team who started the station, I thought you might like to see some early 'photos of our "young" team - and me! BBC Radio lancashire (as it's now known) moved to Darwen Street in 1988, so this year is their 20th birthday.

BBC Radio Blackburn changed its name on July 4th 1981 - and became a County station - rather than one just for North East Lancashire. Originally only heard on 96.4 VHF - Medium Wave was added in 1972 and more transmitters were built after the name change.

Now you can tune in on 103.9 FM (Winter Hill)
95.5 FM (Hameldon Hill) 104.5 FM (Morecambe Bay) 855 AM (Riley Green) 1557 AM (Oxcliffe) plus DAB Digital Radio (from Winter Hill) and On-line at bbc.co.uk/lancashire
The Langham - BBC Training Unit in 1970 (now a rather posh London Hotel!)
The late John Musgrave was BBC Radio Blackburn's first Manager. John chose us all and put the staff together for North East Lancs. FIRST Radio station. He must have believed we had SOME talent!

This is the original team photo' taken in October 1970 as the staff got together for the "basic" training course. We were in London at "The Langham" - across the road from Broadcasting House for three weeks. Also sharing the facilities were BBC Radio Humberside.
