NOT a good day at the office
Rovers booted out of the FA Cup
Blackburn Rovers 1-4 Coventry City
After what looked like a solid enough start - with Rovers under no threat for half an hour - Coventry City broke and Michael Mifsud scored his first of two FA Cup goals at Ewood. 0-1 down at the break and expectations were that Rovers changed look side (Treacy, Burner and Rigters all started) would soon be back on level terms. Sadly just the reverse was true - and after a little more urgency Zurab Khizanishvili fouled Leon Best on the goal line and Elliott Ward scored from the spot to make it 0-2! From this point on it all got very scrappy - the intended sub of Gamst for Treacy canceled and instead an injured Brett Emerton came off. Next Maceo Rigters was replaced by Ryan Nelsen, and the formation was anyone's guess. Chris Samba went up front with Benni McCarthy and other players seemed unsure of just where they should be. At the second attempt Treacy did go off - but a half fit Matt Derbyshire came on to bolster the attack. Sadly all to no avail as Dele Adebola made it 0-3 in the 82nd minute ... Thankfully a few moments later David Bentley claimed one back fir the disheveled Rovers (1-3) and it looked like a let attach might salvage something. But it was not to be and Michael Mifsud claimed his second deep into injury time. 1-4 the resulting scoreline, and Coventry convincingly through to the 4th round. The RADIO ROVERS inbox was filled with emails from unhappy fans - as texts and phone calls added to the post match misery.
Mark Hughes admitted it was all a bitter disappointment:- "I thought Coventry were excellent and fully deserved their win. They seemed to want it more than we did. Our second-half performance was very disappointing and in many aspects it was unacceptable. I'm not going to hide behind any excuses like injuries or team selection, for we had enough out there to have put on a much better show than that. I can understand the fans' frustrations, they have been used to some good times in cup competitions here - with a couple of FA Cup semi-finals in the last three seasons - but this was not one of them."
So no more cup glory this season - with Europe and the two domestic competitions now all gone. Mark Hughes now faces his toughest test - to turn round the fortunes in the league and add to the back to back wins with the trip to Bolton next weekend. Incidentally, both they and Everton were also dumped out this afternoon. (5th January 2008)
