CARLING CUP ROUND 2 DRAW
Blackburn Rovers will be away

Blackburn Rovers were one of the seeded teams in tonight's Carling Cup draw. That meant that the decision of home or away was made ahead of the full draw and when the name Gillingham count out of the bowl it was Rovers who will have to travel. With Preston, Blackpool and Accrington Stanley still amongst the 2nd round sides - a great local derby could have been on the cards. However the Priestfield Stadium will stage the tie with the League One side who got off to a good start with a 2-1 win last weekend at home to Plymouth.
(12th August 2009)

FIRST SEASON WIN AT GILLINGHAM
Gillingham 1-3 Rovers

Seven changes for Rovers - and the Carling Cup gave first starts this season to David Dunn and Steven Reid. And it Dunny just five minutes to make his mark, Nicola Kalinic providing the ball that allowed the Rovers 'veteran' to put the ball away. 'Junior' Hoilett - making his first Rovers senior start was next to find the net, playing on the right side of midfield. He'd been threatening fro some time before claiming his debut goal on the stroke of half time. Another good start to part two for Rovers, but it was Gillingham who were next to to make their mark, with a penalty awarded for 'an unfair challenge' on Simeon Jackson by Zurab Khizanishvili. Jackson placed the ball on the spot and beat Jason Brown - despite the rovers keep going the right way. But Blackburn continued to come up with the chances, Jason Roberts - on for Kalinic - found the under side of the bar, and was very unlucky not to score. Then the three hundred odd Rovers fans who'd traveled for the game got their reward as Morten Gamst Pedersen did what we'd been told he could do ... score direct from a corner! With fifteen minutes left, Morten tried to repeat the trick, and Blackburn could have scored more. But Sam will be happy with the first season win, and progress to the Carling Cup third round - the draw on Saturday at noon. According to radio commentary, 'Junior' Hoilett deserved the man of the match award. The only cause for concern - the departure at the break of Steven Reid - with what might by a ham string problem. You can hear all the details on Saturday morning 'live' on RADIO ROVERS. (25th August 2009)

FIRST OF THE SEASON FOR McCARTHY
Blackburn Rovers 1-0 Nottingham Forest

It was all change at the City ground (10 of them) as Blackburn hoped to put Sunday's sorry display at Everton behind them and hope for success in the Carling Cup .. But things didn't looked to have changed too much as Forest took charge for the first period. Slowly Rovers seemed to come into the game, with youngster Phil Jones making a brilliant debut in defense. But when former Blackburn boy Joe Garner concedes a free kick for a foul on Martin Olsson, it was Benni McCarthy who stepped up to take the shot. His ball passed everyone including the keeper to find the back of the net. 1-0 and that's just how it stayed. Blackburn had a few chances - but there was little for Forest until Steven Reid handled to provide them with a penalty. But when Dexter Blackstock struck the shot, Jason Brown dived the right way and the ball stayed out of the Rovers net! There were a few more nervy moments - but Blackburn survived to progress to the next round - where they won't meet Blackpool or Burnley who both lost to leave Blackburn the only Lancashire side left in the competition.
