CARLOS,
DERBS and EMERTON ON TARGET
As Rovers sail through to the next round
Blackburn Rovers 4 - 1 Grimsby Town
It didn't look like the perfect start
when Tom Newey placed a free kick just under the bar and Grimsby took
the lead after just 6 minutes. But normal service was resumed within
ten minutes and Rovers pushed aside the Mariners to claim their place
in the Carling Cup 3rd Round. All the talk was about the eight changes
made by Paul Ince, and starts for new boys Villanueva and Simpson
- with Keith Treacy at left back and Carlos up front with Matt Derbyshire.
Everyone had their hopes for the Chilean, and he didn't disappoint.
His goal in the 17th minute curled in from 20 yards out, and his reputation
was assured. He could have made it two on the half hour, but the ball
fell to Matt Derbyshire to tap in for his first of the night. Next
up - for the first time since 2005 - Brett Emerton scored a cracking
goal from 18 yards out. And he should have collected his second two
minutes later if it hadn't been for the Grimsby keeper. So 3-1 at
the break and lots to look forward to. Ten minutes into the half,
Morten Gamst Pedersen provided Derbyshire with the perfect cross to
claim his second, and he should have gone on to get at least two more!
Phil Barnes had a great night between the sticks for the visitors,
or it would have been a cricket score. Great entertainment and a wonderful
debut for Carlos, Treacy and Simpson. Jason Brown (in for Paul Robinson)
had nothing to do other than collect the ball from the back of his
net in the early stages.
Assistant Ray Mathias told RADIO ROVERS "In
the first 20-25 minutes I thought they were in the game and pressured
us a lot. But
once we got into our pattern of play things started doing the right
things I think things started to change then."
Of
Carlos Villanueva - Ray said:
"He started off a little bit shaky, feeling the pressure of the
game just trying to get into the tempo of the game. But once he got
into that he was absolutely fantastic. We've
seen him score goals like that all the time in training so it just
shows what he can do. He also had a hand in two of the other goals
so it was a complete performance from the boy..... When you talk about
man-of-the-match displays I thought Matt did very well indeed, you
look at the chances he's created for himself with his movement and
the crosses coming into the box he could have four or five goals tonight.
Keith is a great athlete, he can get forward and deliver good quality
crosses and also he has pace to defend at the back."
So
Rovers are in the draw from Round 3 on Saturday lunchtime and another
Rovers star was born! (27th August 2008) |

MAGIC
MARTIN -IN ALL CHANGE ROVERS
Backburn
Rovers 1 - 0 Everton
Carling Cup 3rd Round
Paul Ince made seven changes from the
side who won 1-0 on Saturday against Fulham ... and the result - the
same result! But the changes - which included Stephen Warnock a captain
playing in midfield with Tugay - played some lovely passing football,
and the win was well deserved. The winning goal came from Martin Olsson
in the 10th minute - and courtesy of debutant Robbie Fowler who set
up the young Rovers defender. The down side was an injury to Paul
Robinson who left the game two minutes later to be replaced by Jason
Brown. Matt Derbyshire started up front with Fowler, and could have
made it 2-0 ... but didn't! Treacy also came close and later Fowler
might have claimed his first Blackburn goal. Everton played most of
their first team, and later brought on Tim Cahil and Yakubu. James
Vaughan thought he'd equalised but his effort was ruled out. Tugay
collected a well deserved man of the match, and was praised by Everton
Manager David Moyes who told reporters "I
have to give Blackburn credit. They played well and Tugay was the
best player on the pitch. He controlled the game, especially in the
first half, and we should have played much better."
Paul Ince now has the headache of which
11 to start with at St. James's on Saturday! His mix of young &
old provided the 14,000 plus crowd with some great entertainment.
He said "The two old men (Robbie Fowler and Tuguy) were
different class. Robbie was champing at the bit and keen to prove
a point. I played him in a slightly deeper role and he did ever so
well. He never lost a ball and had a couple of chances. He made a
difference tonight and showed a lot of lovely touches. He is a natural
goalscorer and you do not lose it. The signs are good."
Two clean sheets this week, and two wins over
Everton this season. (24th September 2008) |

to a solo goal from Martin Olsson. The Full draw is:

ROVERS
CRUZ INTO QUARTER FINALS
Sunderland
1-2 Blackburn Rovers
Paul Ince made 7 changes from the team
who lost at Ewood Park at the weekend - and the Blackburn Manager gave
a debut to young midfield player Andy Haworth. Robbie Fowler joined Matt
Derbyshire up front and there was also a recall for Keith Treacy. With
just 6 minutes gone it was Haworth who had Rovers first shot at goal -
but shot wide. There weren't that many more first half chances for either
side - but Paul Robbinson made a reflex save to deny Danny Collins and
Kenwyne Jones found the bar. 0-0 at the break. The game came to life with
the introduction of Roque Santa Cruz - on for Andy Haworth ... within
moments Chris Samba had provide the perfect cross for Roque to head home.
Five minutes later Rovers were two up after Phillip Bardsley gifted them
with an own goal. And that's when things could have gone badly wrong.
60 seconds later Kenwyne Jones had got one back for the home side ...
and from a period of dominance, Rovers looked vulnerable. But Blackburn
held on to continue their excellent record in the North East.
Rovers last win was at Newcastle at the end of September - and it's Sunderland
again on Saturday at Ewood Park. Paul Ince will now be delighted to find
his side in the Quarter Finals of the League Cup draw on Saturday lunchtime.

ROVERS
AWAY TO UNITED IN CARLING CUP
Tough Quarter final draw
Rovers hope of a home tie & possibly
Championship opposition wasn't to be as the draw was made for the quarter
finals of this years Carling Cup. The dream of a Lancashire derby with
Burnley didn't materialise - what did is probably one of the toughest
ties left in the competition. Blackburn Rovers heard Manchester Untied
get a home tie & then ball number 2 - reveal their name to visit Old
Trafford!
The full draw for the final four games is:
Stoke City v Derby County ~ Manchester United v
Blackburn Rovers ~ Burnley v Arsenal ~ Watford v Tottenham Hotspur

EIGHT
GOAL THRILLER
ROVERS GO OUT OF THE CUP
Manchester
United 5-3 Blackburn Rovers
Carlos Tevez claimed four for United -
Benni McCarthy two for Rovers ... The scoreline doesn't tell the tail
of a game that saw the visitors have a first half that could have seen
them at least two up! After weathering a little early Man U pressure,
Blackburn were into their stride and kept testing Foster - the young United
keeper. But on 34 minutes Ryan Giggs took a free kick, and Tevez headed
home his first of the night. Just five minutes later Luis Nani made it
2-0. Rovers should have been well out of it - but at half time Paul Ince
brought on Benni McCarthy to play along side Roque Santa Cruz, and after
just two minutes he's scored his first to make it 2-1. Rovers were still
celebrating their partial recovery when Andre Ooijer fouled Tevez and
the striker scored again from the spot. Five minutes later and Tevez was
there again and United had a 4-1 lead ... but still Blackburn tried to
stay in the game. Next up with just seven minutes to go was Matt Derbyshire,
and there was still belief that perhaps a late rally could force extra
time. With 92 minutes on the watch Derbs shot across the box and McCarthy
was there to tap in Blackburns third of the tie. 4-3 and still two minutes
to play ... but sadly the final say went to Carlos Tevez - who claimed
him fourth and send United into the semi finals.
Blackburn certainly never allowed Man U to have all the say - but left
themselves with far too much to do - and too many goals conceded yet again.
