CARLING
CUP 2007-8
Rovers get home tie against Birmingham City
Blackburn Rovers have an all Premier
League tie in the third round of this year Carling Cup. First out
of the hat, the draw sees them at home to Birmingham City. The two
sides last played each other in this competition in Rovers'
title winning season. That year (94/95) over two legs, Blackburn beat
Birmingham 2-0 at Ewood with goals from Chris Sutton and Jason Wilcox,
and drew 1-1 at St Andrews. Chris Sutton again the Rovers scorer.
The game will be played w/c 24 September 2007. Last season Rovers
were drawn at home to Chelsea and lost 2-0 on a dreadful night at
Ewood.
The full draw is:-
Blackburn v Birmingham ~ Reading v Liverpool
~ Manchester United v Coventry ~ Tottenham v Middlesbrough ~ Hull
v Chelsea ~ Blackpool v Southend ~ West Ham v Plymouth ~ Arsenal v
Newcastle ~ Luton v Charlton ~ Manchester City v Norwich ~ Sheffield
United v Morecambe ~ Sheffield Wednesday v Everton ~ Fulham v Bolton

Rovers
Cruz to 4th round of the Carling Cup
Blackburn Rovers 3 - 0 Birmingham City
Roque
Santa Cruz put the icing on the cake of a conclusive 3-0 win over
fellow Premier League side Birmingham City. The Rovers striker found
the target for the first time at Ewood - and with just seconds to
go. Steve Bruce said he had no complaints - after making 11 changes
to his side - that saw starts for three former rovers Tiny Taylor,
Neil Dans and captain Damien Johnson. But it was a very one sided
game - with half dozen chances before the break. City suffered a head
injury to their keeper Richard Kingson who collided with his own post
and was stretched off to hospital.
Rovers too lost a key player when Jason Roberts was taken off injured.
53 minutes played before half time - and still remarkably 0-0. But
when the first goal came it was a stunning David Bentley long distance
screamer on 65 minutes. Matt Derbyshire was fouled in the box by sub
Rafael Schmitz and converted the penalty with ease to make it 2-0
(79'00) and the game was all but over. However there was still time
for Santa Cruz to find the net with a diving head on 89 minutes to
complete the evening. Hughes made a number of changes, resting among
others Benni McCarthy, Robbie Savage and Morten Gamst Pedersen. Martin
Olsson impressed, Aaron Mokoena had a good game, and David Dunn picked
up man of the match. Mark Hughes told RADIO ROVERS: "I
thought we were excellent. I thought our general play, the quality
of our passing and movement, the way we circulated the ball was first
class. We could have won even more comfortably but I think it was
all to do with our attitude."
So it's Rovers in the 4th round draw at the weekend ... and all memories
of the past two defeats dispatched in fine style. (26th September

Rovers
through to Quarter Finals
Portsmouth 1 - 2 Blackburn Rovers
Blackburn Rovers made it a seventh victory in all competitions - ironically
beating the last team to beat them! The trip to Fratton Park saw goals
from Benni McCarthy and Morten Gamst Pedersen, but like at Spurs,
suffered further injury worries. This time it was Aaron Mokoena -
in for Robbie Savage - who left the game with a suspected broken leg.
However rovers.co.uk say that it might be less serious than originally
thought. Also taken out of the action was David Bentley - who was
still suffering from a knock he picked up at White Hart Lane. Back
at the game, it took just ten minutes for Rovers to take the lead,
Mokoena setting up Benni McCarthy for a close range opener. Morten
Gamst Pedersen put the game beyond Portsmouth with another close range
shot with 15 minutes to go. The home side picked up a very late consolation
goal when Kanu headed home on 92 minutes.
Mark Hughes told reporters: "I thought
Benni McCarthy was absolutely magnificent. I took a lot of pleasure
watching him. His retention of the ball and his work in tight areas
was a joy to watch. He was always in there looking for scoring chances.
He's back where he should be at."
There was a chance too for Berner to start and Derbyshire off the
bench. But now with the additional injuries Mark Hughes will have
to change things again for the visit of Liverpool on TV this Saturday
tea time.
After minor surgery, Robbie Savage could be out for action 'till mid
December - but at least Ryan Nelsen was back in action for the cup
game, and Reid played 55 minutes in the reserves on Monday Night.
The Quarter final draw takes place on Sat November 3rd, and these
are the rest of tonight's results:-
Sheff Utd 0-3 Arsenal ~ Luton 0-1 Everton (aet)
~ Tottenham 2-0 Blackpool ~ Liverpool 2-1 Cardiff ~ Portsmouth 1-2
Blackburn ~ Bolton 0-1 Manchester City ~ Coventry 1-2 West Ham

Quarter final tough test
The draw for the final 8 of this years
League Cup saw Blackburn Rover the penultimate team to come out of
the hat. The great news is that this offered a home game, and amazingly
the team they'll meet is the one who they beat 4-0 in the same round
back in 2001-2. Yes Arsenal! And you'll recall that they went on to
win the Worthington cup that season.
Mark Hughes scored in that game season - with a Hat trick for Matt
Jansen. The boss told RADIO ROVERS he's more than happy with what
will be a big game at Ewood - scheduled for the w/c 17th December.
The full draw is:
West Ham v Everton (w/c 10th Dec) ~ Man City v Spurs ~ Chelsea v Liverpool
~ Blackburn v Arsenal (w/c 17th Dec)

Santa
puts two more in the sack - but Rovers go out of the Cup
Blackburn Rovers
2 - 3 Arsenal
It went to extra time - Arsenal played
a 'youth team' and went down to ten men - Rovers came from behind
- but still went out of the Carling Cup.
Another poor first half display saw Abou Diaby give visitors the lead
after just 5 minutes. Blackburn looked nervous and shaky in defense.
Eventually Rovers seemed to come back into the game, and David Dunn
came close on 28 minutes - but just 30 seconds later their lead was
extended to 2-0 when Eduardo opened his account. Like at Wigan - it
was all going a bit pear shape when Roque Santa Cruz (possibly off
side) scored his first of the night. With just minutes to go to the
break - a good time to restore some confidence. After the interval
another Rovers came out to pressure the young gunners. Santa Cruz
was rewarded on the hour with his second, and at 2-2 all to play for.
A two footed challenge by Denilson saw him see red, and the 90 minutes
ended with extra time and penalties on offer. An injury to sub youngster
Barazite broke Rovers concentration, as the first quarter hour became
20 minutes. On 103 mins, Eduardo scored his second, and Arsenal's
winning goal, to make it 2-3 and send Blackburn out of the cup.
But there were some positive signs for Mark Hughes - with a battling
second half and two more goals from Roque - now on 11 for the season.
Hughes told RADIO ROVERS:- "In the second
half we came out with a lot more resolve and determination, and the
guys were prepared to do those hard yards that you have to to get
the results at that level and we get back on level terms. So at that
point you hope it is going to be more of the same and we could go
on and take the tie. But at the moment we are expending so much energy
in trying to get back on level terms that it is taking its toll, there
will be periods where we switch off and good teams will punish you
and that proved to be the case." (18th December 2007) |
