Rovers go out of the Carling Cup
Steve Patrick and his ground staff spent the three hours prior to kick off getting the Ewood turf playable. They succeeded, but the conditions didn't help either team play much in the way of flowing football. Having said that Blackburn more than held their own for the first half, and looked comfortable at the break. The second 45 was a different story, with both Morten Gamst Pedersen and Shabani Nonda taken off injured - Nonda on a stretcher. Joe Cole gave the Champions the lead on 52 minutes, and Salomon Kalou confirmed the Chelsea win in the 81st. But could the early departure from he cup be a blessing in disguise? Mark Hughes told RADIO ROVERS "I'm not too disappointed, I thought there was some good performances, ideally we would have liked to have gone through but it is always going to be difficult against the Premiership champions.
We kept at it, we kept trying to get the balls into good areas, to cause them a few problems but in the end it wasn't enough."
You never want to loose, but with the UEFA cup again next week, and the league on Sunday, fighting on all fronts at full strength was always going to be a tough test.
Of the two injuries, the manager said "Chris (Nonda) went for an x-ray, but he's ok. We hope it is just a bang and a little bit of fluid in there. Morten twisted his ankle but we are hopeful that he'll be ok. That is the disappointment, we didn't want to lose any players from the squad."
