UEFA Cup 1st leg
Rovers came from behind to take a 2-1 lead
- up to injury time, then conceded a 92nd minute equalizer. But
importantly for Blackburn, they scored two away goals and must
go into the second leg as favorites. The first half was also interrupted
with a 7 minute brake after the lights went out.
Rovers first came from a free kick and a rare Robbie Savage goal,
the second courtesy of Benni McCarthy. Mark Hughes must be pleased
with the chances his team created, and at least four more could
easily have gone their way after the break. Mark Hughes was "slightly
deflated" but thought he'd probably look back on the
game more favorably. He told BBC RADIO LANCASHIRE that Tugay had
a great game, and was delighted with the goals from Savage and
McCarthy. Home advantage should help and of course Ewood Park's
grass pitch!

UEFA Cup 2nd leg ... and onwards!
Rovers survived an early scare and then put on a great performance
to progress in this years UEFA Cup. Benni McCarthy made it two
in two, adding to his 1st leg goal, and a brilliant shot from
David Bentley saw Rovers comfortably continue the European adventure.
McCarthy's goal came courtesy of MGP who threads the ball through
to the corner of the area where the South African put the ball
into the visitors net. Not to be outdone, David Bentley put his
away from 30 yards out, over the keepers head. BBC Sport say:
The strike will probably not be bettered
this season, with Bentley cushioning McCarthy's headed pass on
his chest before unleashing a shot from well outside the box."
Talking on RADIO ROVERS - Mark Hughes told fans: "
I thought we were excellent. I thought from
start to finish we really got the ball down and set the tempo
and set momentum of the game, and really didn't give a good Salzburg
side any encouragement whatsoever. It was a really good professional
performance and a good European start we hope."

UEFA CUP DRAW (3rd October 2006)
Tuesdays
UEFA cup draw gives Rovers games against Dutch side Feyenoord,
Swiss side FC Basel, Poles Wisla Krakow and Nancy of France.
The matches will be played as follows:
Thursday 19th October: Wisla Krakow v Rovers
Thursday 2nd November: Rovers v Basel
Thursday 23rd November: Feyenoord v Rovers
Thursday 30th November: Free week
Wednesday 13th December: Rovers v Nancy.
John Williams told rovers.co.uk "I think
the draw has been relatively kind to us. We want to treat the
competition with respect and we won't want to underestimate the
opposition. The travel times aren't too bad either, which means
it is easier on the players, and also good for our traveling supporters.
We are determined to do well in this competition. We haven't had
the best of records in the past but we are keen to put that right."
And Mark Hughes added: "We've managed
to avoid long distance trip to far away places which is always
a consideration when league games come up short so quickly after.
I'm reasonably happy with how it has panned out. Although the
strength of the overall competition this year ensures that whatever
you got would be difficult."

Rovers come from behind to claim all the points.
David Bentley secured Blackburn's
win in Poland with just 1 minute of normal time left to go. The
visitors dominated the second half and it had always seemed like
'a matter of time'.
Blackburn looked comfortable in opening play, but Mauro Roberto
Cantoro scored for Wisla from the corner, with the ball taking
a wicked deflection on the way past Friedel. It took Rovers a
while to adjust and Mark Hughes had 'things to say' in the dressing
room at half time. Whatever he said had the desired effect ...
on 55 minutes there was that rare site of a Robbie Savage goal
thanks to a great cross from David Bentley. Blackburn made a couple
of subs, and continued to apply pressure looking fro the winner.
When it came, the visitors had tried the shot from the right,
center and finally left of the area. It was David Bentley who
tucked it away from 12 yards out.
Rovers could justifiably claimed a penalty, and should have won
by a bigger margin - but win they did to continue their impressive
recent form in Europe and the league. (19th October 2006

Three goal thriller in the last quarter of an hour.
Another game of two distinct halves
- the first one saw Brad Friedel make a couple of superb and essential
saves - the second saw a different Rovers and THREE goals! Tugay
scored one of his Turkish delights from at least 25 yards to brake
the deadlock on 74 minutes and then it was all Rovers to the end.
With three minutes to go, MGP was fouled in the area, and sub
Francis Jeffers made no mistake with the penalty (2-0). We thought
it was all over, and on 91 minutes it was when Benni McCarthy
added to the tally with his 7th for the season - and 3rd in Europe.
The only true downside was another injury - this time to Robbie
Savage who went off before he break, and will be out for a few
weeks with his thigh.
Mark Hughes was full of praise for 'Man of the Match' Tugay -
he told RADIO ROVERS "It was a fantastic
strike from Tugay. He was excellent all night as he has been all
season. We needed a little bit of magic at that point. I think
we are going to get nights like that here we hope, good teams
are going to come here and be organised and have a game plan and
we have to be up to it. I thought today we were nice and solid,
created chances and in the end got our reward for a good professional
performance."
Rovers Top Group E with 6 points from their two wins.

Rovers guaranteed a place in knock out stage after
goalless draw in Holland
Brad Friedel gave another five
star performance ... but Chris Nonda seemed to miss some golden
opportunities - stopping on one occasion with the ball at his
feet, and no off side flag. Rovers showed some good form in patches,
but the home side - in front of 35,000 - created plenty of chances
too. A couple of penalty decisions that might have gone
against Rovers were ruled out, and replays showed Dutchman Andre
Ooijer chested, not handled the ball.
Mark Hughes told reporters; "It was a
good professional European performance. It's a difficult place
to come with a vociferous crowd and decent opposition but I thought
we controlled the game. We dictated the first 30 minutes, possibly
let them back in it for 10 or 15 minutes either side of the break,
but I always felt we were in control."
Blackburn took 2350 fans to Holland, and in the end the point
was enough, with Rovers top of the group table collecting 7 points
from the first 3 games.

Blackburn
Rovers 1- AS Nancy 0
Injury time winner from Lucas Neill sees Rovers
top the group
Mark Hughes made plenty of changes,
for the final Group E game - Matt Derbyshire, Paul Gallagher,
Jay McEvely and Sergio Peter all starting. An injury to Andy Todd
saw Eddie Nolan come of the bench for his senior start. The game
called upon Brad Friedel to show some of his superb qualities,
and Nancy certainly tested Rovers resolve, but the Frenchmen really
only came fro the point they needed to finish top. Mark Hughes
admitted that the tactic probably led to a less than exiting spectacle.
Already guaranteed a place in the final 32, Blackburn still hoped
to go through group winners. With three minutes of injury time
signaled that didn't seem likely - until a cross from David Bentley
found captain Lucas Neill about 12 yards out to fire home. There
was less than a minute of added time to go - and no chance for
Nancy to regroup and get back in the game
Mark Hughes told RADIO ROVERS . "In recent
weeks we've had that happen to us - conceding late on - but we
kept going and I felt we were the more positive team. They came
and were just looking to hit us on the break and were quite happy
to see the game out and get the draw that they needed. It wasn't
very positive from their point of view and the game was slow and
it was difficult to get any momentum in our play because of their
attitude to the game, but we kept going and got our reward in
the end.

Rovers
come from behind twice & should have won in Germany
(final 32)
Blackburn will be asking themselves how
they missed four golden chances of goals in the first half, and
failed to continue to pressurise after the break. However, it's
only half time - Rovers have two away goals, and on the night
the conditions almost guaranteed there would be mistakes.
The match started brightly for Blackburn - and Jason Roberts should
have scored within the opening 2 minutes. They continued to create
chances, but it was Leverkusen who scored first when Jan-Ingwer
Callsen-Bracker headed home from a free kick. With the half ticking
away David Bentley took a Rovers free kick, and via a wicked deflection
the ball was in the net, 1-1. Ironically Carsten Ramelow gave
the home side the lead again via another defection on 43 minutes.
2-1 at the break and every chance of Rovers taking the lead in
the second period. Somehow they failed to keep up the pressure,
and it was the German side that scored again courtesy of Bernd
Schneider on 55 minutes. But Rovers kept trying to push forward
and with the substitution of Chris Nonda on for Jason Roberts
they were rewarded with five minutes to go. David Bentley took
a free kick from the left of the box, and through a group of players
it was Nonda who volleyed home from close range.
Blackburn again were forced to play a much changed side - with
injuries and ineligible. Mark Hughes can now prepare for the return
leg just a goal down - and must be happy with the two scored away
from home.

European dream ends at Ewood
Blackburn Rovers have plenty to be proud of ... and their UEFA
quest included clean sheets in all their home games. But that
doesn't dim the disappointment of keeping another one tonight,
but failing to find the net with any of their chances. Benni McCarthy
and sub Chris Nonda both got close, as did other players, but
none was a true tough test of the Leverkusen keeper. There was
criticism for the Spanish officials - but they didn't bring the
dream to and end.
At the end of the day, the tie was probably lost last week in
Germany when Rovers conceded 3 goals. All the visitors needed
to do was not let Rovers score, and their game plan worked. Mark
Hughes told Radio Rovers: "It's not to
be this year, but we've got to work really hard from now until
the end of the season to make sure we are in the competition next
year hopefully. We've enjoyed the European campaign, it has been
good for us and good for the development of the team and the squad.
We've struggled of late because of the injuries we've had, but
overall we'll learn from this and be a better team."
And with players such as Robbie Savage and Steven Reid long term
injuries, it was always going to tough. Now it's the league on
Sunday and FA Cup again next Wednesday. (22nd February 2007)
